MN West men lose by one point against Fergus Falls

WORTHINGTON -- The Minnesota West men's basketball team dropped its first conference game of the season against Minnesota State Technical College at Fergus Falls Wednesday night.

The Bluejays had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, having stolen the ball with seconds remaining in regulation and trailing by one. After calling a timeout and setting up a play, MN West missed the basket and lost the game 69-68.

MN West dropped to 6-8 on the season and is now 0-1 in the conference.

"It was a really close game," head coach Justin Heckenlaible said. "We had a chance to win the game and we just didn't make the plays we had to at the end. We competed, though. And we played really hard."

Heckenlaible added the difference in the game was the huge difference in free throws -- the Spartans took 29 shots from the line whereas the Bluejays took just 14. Also, MN West turned the ball over 21 times compared to 16 turnovers commited by Fergus Falls.

"It's tough to win on the road in this conference," Heckenlaible said. "The difference was we just didn't take care of the ball as well as we should have. I'm proud of the effort, there's just some little things we need to take care of."

MN West was led by Luke Roddy's 16 points. Mitch Hopkins added a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bluejays travel to Willmar on Wednesday to take on Ridgewater in another conference matchup.
