AMATEUR BASEBALL: First round of amateur league playoffs wrap up

HERON LAKE -- Scoring the game's final four runs after trailing 5-2 Sunday afternoon, the Minneota Mudhens claimed a 6-5 victory over the Heron Lake Lakers in Game 3 of their best-of-three amateur baseball playoff series at Laker Field.

Minneota, which also won Game 1 by a final score of 6-5 in Lakefield, wins the series 2-1 and advances to the eight-team Region 13C tournament beginning Wednesday night. Heron Lake, which won Game 2 9-3 in 11 innings at Minneota, finishes its season with a record of 13-12.

The Lakers scored in each of the first four frames and held a 5-2 lead going into the fifth, but the Mudhens chipped away with a pair of one-run innings and then took a 6-5 edge with two runs in the eighth.

Justin Greenwood was 2-for-4 with an RBI double (second inning) and a solo home run (sixth inning) to lead Minneota at the plate. Leo Zerr, Riley Carpenter (RBI), Jason MacKinnon, Jesus Macias, Beau Buysse and Jason Myhre each smacked a base hit for the Mudhens, as well.

Tony Shaikoski, who came on in relief in all three games of the series, pitched the final three innings to earn the win for Minneota. Cal Swedzinski (2 1/3 innings) and Danny Hennen (3 2/3 innings) also saw time on the mound for the Mudhens.

Ben Scheevel (double), Ethan Duffy (RBI), Tom Albrecht, Ike Rogers (two RBIs) and Eric Milbrath each cracked two hits for Heron Lake, while Kirk McBreen and Octavio Jimenez collected a single apiece for the Lakers.

Duffy (six walks, no strikeouts) pitched six innings for Heron Lake, while Scheevel (one strikeout, no walks) hurled the last three frames.

Hadley wins two against Fox Lake

HADLEY -- The Hadley Buttermakers are moving on to the next round of the amateur league playoffs after defeating the Fox Lake Foxes 7-6 in 15 innings in Game 2 on Saturday and 14-13 in Game 3 on Sunday.

In Game 2, the Foxes put up the first run of the game in the top of the second inning, but the Buttermakers would tie the game up with a run in the bottom of the fourth.

Hadley would score again in the fifth to take their first lead of the game, but Fox Lake came right back and tied the game at two in the top of the sixth.

However, the Buttermakers nabbed three more runs in the bottom of the inning to take a three run lead into the seventh.

The Foxes made a comeback in the top of the eighth to go ahead by one, but Hadley mustered up a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game once again at six.

Neither team would score in the ninth, which forced extra innings.

Both teams would be in a stalemate until the bottom of the 15th inning, when the Buttermakers claimed victory on an RBI hit by Nate Wieneke.

The winning pitcher for Hadley was James Wajer, who pitched seven and two-thirds innings of shutout baseball in relief. Zach Bruns started the game at pitcher for Hadley.

Joe Larson, Eric Wieneke, Max Zwarts, Alex Peterson and Nate Wieneke all had two hits for Hadley, with Zwarts getting two RBIs and Nate Wieneke driving in the winning run.

The losing pitcher for Fox Lake was Brennan Holm, who entered the game in relief in the eighth inning. Miah Fitzgerald was the starting pitcher for the Foxes.

In Game 3, Fox Lake jumped out to a four run lead in the top of the first, but Hadley would get three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a 4-3 game.

The Buttermakers took the lead in the bottom of the second after they scored four runs to make it 7-4 Hadley.

Hadley scored one run in the next three innings while their defense shutout the Foxes. But Fox Lake grabbed two more runs in the top of the sixth come within four runs of the Buttermakers.

Fox Lake scored another two runs to cut Hadley's lead to two going into the bottom of the eighth. The Buttermakers grabbed one more run in the bottom of the eighth to go back up by three.

But the Foxes stormed back in the top of the ninth to score five runs and take a two run lead on the Buttermakers.

Hadley scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to take the win 14-13 over the Foxes.

Paul Counter was the starter for the Buttermakers, with Jamie Belter getting the win in relief.

Eric Wieneke (4-for-6) had three RBIs, a home run and scored three runs, while Counter (2-for-5) also had three RBIs for the Buttermakers.

Jon Traetow got the loss for the Foxes, while Steven Zehms started the game.

Luverne advances to championship game

LUVERNE -- Luverne Legion beat Blue Earth 10-0 Saturday and the beat Windom 11-2 Sunday to win the District Tournament Winners Bracket Championship.

Luverne took a 5-0 lead after the first against Blue Earth and never looked back. The team scored another two runs in the bottom of the second to go up by seven.

Luverne would score three more runs, one in the fourth and another in the sixth to beat Blue Earth in six innings.

Reed Skattum got the win for Luverne while Dallas Barslow got the loss for Blue Earth.

Conner Fitzer, Bradley Dinger and Skylar Wenninger all had multiple hits for Luverne against Blue Earth.

Against Windom, Luverne jumped out to a seven run lead in the bottom of the first. Windom got two runs in the top of the fourth, but it would not be enough to make any kind of comeback.

Cody Christensen got the win for Luverne while Colin Lovell picked up the loss for Windom. Fitzer, Wenninger, Dinger and Josh Slieter all had hits for Luverne while Matt Overgaard had a grand slam in the first inning to power Luverne.

Luverne Legion plays again next Saturday in Truman in the Championship Game.
