MEN'S WRESTLING: Forfeits doom Bluejays during dual versus Iowa Lakes

ESTHERVILLE, Iowa -- Minnesota West won four of the seven contested matches, but dropped a 30-18 dual decision to Iowa Lakes on Wednesday.

The Lakers, which benefitted from three forfeited weight classes, gained 18 points in the process. The Bluejays could not fill spots at 133, 174 and 285 pounds.

Dustin Horne (133), Nick Lawrence (174) and Glenn Cothren (285) were the Iowa Lakes wrestlers who were handed the forfeits.

Minnesota West performed well during the other seven bouts. Jadon Evans (157) and Greg Gainey (165) earned victories for the Bluejays with pins. Michael Tanner (149) and Taylor Andrews (197) preserved wins with decisions.

"We had a good effort and I think we outworked Iowa Lakes, an NJCAA Division I team, in the matches that took place," Bluejays coach Bob Purcell said. "Unfortunately, we gave up 18 points in forfeits and it hurt us."

Evans used 6 minutes, 28 seconds to pin James Smith, while Gainey secured his pin against Jake Thompson in 4:40.

"Jadon Evans came through for us again," Purcell said. "He was losing his match, but stuck with it by outworking his opponent and wearing him down. Jadon was down by five points before he made his comeback."

Tanner and Andrews both recorded slim decisions in exciting fashion.

At 149, Tanner and Travis Johnson were tied at 1 heading into the third period, when Tanner was able to secure a 2-1 win with a point for riding time.

"He finally wrestled up to his ability by being a worker," Purcell said of Tanner. "Workers have to work consistently throughout the match and they have to keep moving their feet. He did that."

At 197, Andrews and Riley Edwards battled into overtime, when Andrews came up with a takedown to post a 3-1 sudden victory.

"He went in for a single, but switched it to a double and was able to get the takedown," Purcell said of Andrews' strategy.

At 125, the Bluejays' John Bush pushed his match against Dylan Konechne into overtime. But the Lakers' wrestlers ended it with a 4-2 sudden victory.

At 141, Alex Anderson pinned Minnesota West's Matt Magner in 6:10. At 184, Ethan Lundquist had a 16-6 major decision over the Bluejays' Jarell Ferguson.

Minnesota West (0-2 in dual meets) travels to Iowa Falls, Iowa, for a dual against Ellsworth on Tuesday.
