PREP GIRLS HOCKEY: Luverne defeats Fairmont

LUVERNE -- Makayla Sterrett netted a hat trick for the Luverne Cardinals in a 6-1 win over the Fairmont Cardinals during the Class 1A Section 3 Girls Hockey Tournament semifinals Tuesday.

With the win, Luverne advances to the Section finals and will face New Ulm Thursday for the right to go to state.

The Cardinals opened up the scoring on an unassisted goal by Madisyn Dingmann with 9 minutes, 30 seconds left in the first period. Mariah Aukes made it 2-0 in favor of Luverne on her goal with 17 seconds left in the first.

Morgan Hohn scored 2 minutes, 15 seconds into the second period to give the Cardinals a three-goal lead. Sterrett then scored two back-to-back goals less than 30 seconds apart to make it 5-0 for Luverne.

Fairmont picked up its only goal with 7 minutes, 32 seconds left in the second on a power-play goal by Jalyssa Wilson to get on the board.

Sterrett completed her hat trick on a power-play goal with less than 2 minutes left in the third to give the Cardinals back their five-goal cushion.

Kennedy Gonnerman made 15 saves on 16 shots to backstop Luverne, while the Cardinals took 27 shots on Fairmont's Miranda O'Connor.

The Cardinals (15-4) travel to Redwood Falls to play New Ulm Thursday at 7 p.m.

REDWOOD FALLS -- Travis Janssen scored a hat trick to lead the Windom Area Eagles to a win over the Redwood Valley Cardinals Tuesday.

The Eagles scored three goals in the final five minutes of the first period to jump out to a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Dylan Pigman, Devin Nielsen and Kyle Luhmann scored for Windom Area in the first.

The Cardinals got on the board 2 minutes, 34 seconds into the second period on a goal by Austin Kretsch to cut the lead to two.

Windom Area then scored four straight goals to rush to take a six goal lead with under 4 minutes left in the period. Zach Bartosh (shorthanded) and Janssen (three back-to-back) scored for the Eagles in a 6 minute stretch.

Lane Stadther picked up a goal for the Cardinals 15 minutes, 35 seconds into the second to make it 7-2 in favor of the Eagles. But Nielsen scored his second of the night to push Windom Area's lead back to six.

Kretsch and Jacob Prouty scored for Redwood Valley in the third to bring the Cardinals within four of the Eagles, but Windom Area was able to hold on for the win.

Tyler McGowan made 23 saves on 27 shots for the Eagles, while Jordan Houle and Amadeus Jessinghaus combined for 46 saves on 54 shots for the Cardinals.

Windom Area (13-9, 6-4) will start post season play Tuesday, with an opponent yet to be determined.
