PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Wolves get semifinal win

LAKE PARK, Iowa -- Harris-Lake Park defeated Trinity Christian 57-42 in the semifinal round of the IHSAA Class 1A Boys Basketball District 1 Tournament on Tuesday.

The Wolves, (21-2 overall) advanced to the district tournament title game, where they will play Rock Valley (14-8) at Western Christian High School in Hull at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The Rockets edged West Lyon 64-62 in another semifinal round game Tuesday at Inwood.

Tanner Hiveley had 22 points and five rebounds for Harris-Lake Park. Eli Ihnen added 14 points, four rebounds and two steals, while Colin Brons posted 11 points and nine rebounds and Kade Heikens created nine assists.

"Trinity Christian tried to put some pressure on Kade, but he zipped right past his defender and into the paint, where he was able to find Tanner on three straight possessions in the second quarter," Wolves coach Jeff Sohn said. "Kade played an excellent floor game."

Harris-Lake Park led 24-12 at halftime before making a 10-2 run during the first 4 minutes of the third quarter.

The Tigers went on their only run in the last half of the third, when Trinity Christian outscored the Wolves 14-8 to trim the Harris-Lake Park lead to 42-28.

Brad Gritters led Trinity Christian with 10 points.

Spirit Lake 47

SPENCER, Iowa -- Sheldon won the MSHSL Class 2A District 2 Tournament with a win over Spirit Lake on Tuesday.

The Orabs advanced to the Class 2A Substate Tournament, where they will play Hull Western Christian at 7 p.m. Saturday at MOC-Floyd Valley High School in Orange City.

Sheldon used a 21-9 run through the first quarter to take control. Despite losing the second quarter 16-15, the Orabs had a 36-25 halftime lead. Sheldon won the second half by a 31-22 count.

Dallas Ennema scored 32 points to lead the Orabs (21-3). Matt Dykstra added 14 points with the aid of four 3-pointers. James Gradert also scored 14 points for Sheldon, which went 11 of 11 at the free-throw line in the game.

Alec Hendrickson knocked down six 3-pointers en route to scoring 21 points for Spirit Lake (16-8). In the second quarter, Hendrickson kept the Indians alive with 14 points.

Martin County West 55,

Worthington 54

SHERBURN -- Free throws were the difference as Martin County West slipped past Worthington in a non-conference boys basketball game Tuesday.

Cordell Weber erupted to score 28 points as Martin County West improved to 18-5 overall.

The Mavericks are 5-3 against the Class AA Section 3 South Division, while the Trojans remained in the running for a top playoff seed. Worthington is 9-4 in section play.

"We missed some free throws late and (Martin County West) made some," Worthington head coach Ron Vorwald said.

Morgan Traylor had 13 points and 13 rebounds for Worthington (14-8 overall), while Marcus Potter added 14 points. Spencer Grafing chipped in 11 points and Will Dudley posted nine more for the Trojans.

Worthington concludes its regular season with a non-conference game at Cedar Mountain/Comfrey on Friday.

Nicollet 44

NICOLLET -- Five different Jackson County Central players propelled the Huskies to a non-conference win at Nicollet on Tuesday.

Jon Harmening (21 points, 17 rebounds) and Nolan Hoenstein (11 rebounds, 10 points) each recorded double-doubles for JCC. Austin Hinkeldey (13), Brady Place (12), Taylor Christopher (11) all reached double digits in points.

Jackson County Central led by 18 points (42-24) at halftime before outscoring Nicollet 39-20 during the final 18 minutes.

"We played very solid basketball," Huskies head coach Trent Sukalski said.

JCC (13-9) travels to play St. Clair on Thursday.

Fulda 68

FULDA --Adrian held off Fulda for a Red Rock Conference win Tuesday.

The Dragons' Taylor Recker recorded 21 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double. Nick Reyne (20 points, five rebounds, four assists) and Brady Lonneman (12 points, seven rebounds, four assists) also kickstarted Adrian (3-19, 3-11).

Zach Holt (19), Todd Peterson (17) and Andy Oakland (16) were the top three point-scorers for the Raiders (8-16, 6-8). Trevor Ruesch added seven points, six rebounds and five assists.

The victory moved the Dragons out of last place in the conference standings after Edgerton defeated Murray County Central 82-67 on Tuesday.

Adrian hosts Mountain Lake Area and Fulda plays at Red Rock Central in league games Friday.

Southwest Christian 96, Hills-Beaver Creek 69

HILLS -- Five different players scored in double figures as Southwest Christian routed Hills-Beaver Creek in a Red Rock Conference game Tuesday.

Eric Talsma (23 points) and Dominic Nibbelink (21) led the Eagles, while Leighton Sampson (16), Nate Pfeifle (15) and Klint Knutson (10) aided Southwest Christian's effort.

Dylan Gehrke led the Patriots with 20 points, while Jeff Sandbulte added 19 more and Dalton Bass chipped in 10.

Southwest Christian (21-1, 14-0) plays at Edgerton, while Hills-Beaver Creek (11-10, 8-6) travels to play Ellsworth on Friday.

Red Rock Central 62, Westbrook-WG 53, OT

LAMBERTON -- Red Rock Central outlasted Westbrook-Walnut Grove in overtime during a Red Rock Conference game Tuesday.

Austin Price gave the Falcons a 53-50 lead by hitting a 3-pointer in extra time before Red Rock Central capped its 12-3 run by making 9 of 14 free throws.

The Chargers' Shane Buchman had sent the game into overtime by draining a 3-pointer to force a 50-all tie as 25 seconds remained in regulation.

Jeff DeCock scored 24 points to lead Red Rock Central (13-9, 8-6), while Price added 15 more and Henry Rogotzke scored six points, but pulled down 17 rebounds and swatted four blocks.

Buchman led Westbrook-Walnut Grove (8-14, 4-10) with 20 points and Alex Knutson chipped in 18 more.

Red Rock Central hosts Fulda and Westbrook-Walnut Grove hosts Southwestern United, both on Friday.

MOUNTAIN LAKE -- A 31-18 second-half run sealed a Red Rock Conference win as Mountain Lake Area defeated Southwestern United on Tuesday.

The Wolverines (19-4, 13-1) built a 38-26 lead at halftime before pulling away during the final 18 minutes.

Carter Kirk drained 31 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead Mountain Lake Area. Josiah Stoesz added a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds.

Andrew Kramer and Levi Taylor each scored eight points to lead the Wildcats (10-11, 7-7).

Mountain Lake Area plays at Adrian and Southwestern United travel to play Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Friday.

Murray County Central 67

SLAYTON -- Edgerton pulled away during the second half of a Red Rock Conference win at Murray County Central on Tuesday.

The Flying Dutchmen led 39-32 after 18 minutes before outscoring the Rebels 43-35 in the second half.

Four Edgerton players -- Isaac Heard (24), Brett Ford (22), Jesse Bering (11) and Jorge Lopez (10) -- scored in double figures. Heard (11) and Ford (10) were also the leading rebounders for the Flying Dutchmen.

Logan Kluis topped Murray County Central with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Sam Erickson scored 14 points, while Cole Bly contributed 10 more.

Edgerton (8-11, 6-8) hosts Southwest Christian on Friday, while Murray County Central (3-18, 3-10) hosts Red Rock Central on Monday.
