PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Mountain Lake Area heading to state as Section 2 champs

MANKATO -- The Mountain Lake Area Wolverines are headed back to state after defeating Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity 65-30 in the championship game of the MSHSL Class A Section 2 Boys Basketball Tournament on Friday.

The Wolverines took a commanding 28-12 lead into halftime and cruised to the finish, scoring 37 points in the second half to put away the Bulldogs.

Carter Kirk had a game-high 25 points for Mountain Lake Area in the contest, while bringing down 18 rebounds and picking up five assists.

Andrew Hempeck picked up 16 points to go along with eight points from Cody Klassen. Josiah Stoesz was second in rebounding for the Wolverines with 13 and added seven points and seven assists.

Nick Machemehl led the Bulldogs with 13 points on the day.

The Wolverines head into next week's state tournament with a 24-5 record and will find out their opponent today when the state releases the pairings.
