Prep Track: Luverne repeats in Section True Team
PIPESTONE - Winning 10 events, including all four relays, the Luverne boys claimed their third consecutive Section 3A True Team track and field championship Monday at Paulsen Field.
Luverne's girls won seven individual events and finished second in a pair of relays, earning their sixth straight section title, sending both of veteran head coach Craig Nelson's full teams back to the state meet.
"We had some very solid performances on a beautiful day from everyone on our team," Nelson said. "Like always, the competition at the section meet was challenging and we feel very fortunate to come out on top."
Paced by a trio of first-place performances from sophomore Kynzie Smedsrud, Luverne racked up 606 points in the 11-team girls' meet, finishing 106 ahead of second-place Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (500).
Southwest Christian/Edgerton was third with 460 points, followed by Pipestone Area (427), Jackson County Central (426), Murray County Central (379), Hills-Beaver Creek (373), Springfield/Cedar Mountain/Comfrey (339), Windom (316), Adrian (263) and Ellsworth (53).
In the 12-team boys' meet, the Cardinals scored even higher (24 points for an individual first-place finish and 36 points for a winning relay) and also won by more than 100 points.
Luverne had a total score of 687, followed by MCC (584), JCC (522), Fulda (507), Windom (489), T-M-B (448), PA (390), H-BC (380), SWC/E (339), S/CM/C (286), Adrian (221) and Ellsworth (115).
Smedsrud won both hurdle races (17.13 and 48.98) and was also first in the triple jump (31-10).
Tayla Peterson (200, 27.28), Madison Schandelmeier (1,600, 5:26.68), Mariah Aukes (3,200, 12:33.22) and Allison Dohlman (shot put, 34-8) also won events for the Cardinal girls.
Luverne's winning boys' relay teams, clocked times of 46.00, 1:33.13, 3:43.45 and 8:38.33, respectively, in the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800.
Individually, the Cardinals received a pair of first-place finishes on the track from sophomore Drew Weis, who won both the 1,600 (4:52.25) and 800 (2:07.50).
Josh Friedrichson (3,200, 10:53.36), Jon Ehde (100, 11.09), Alex Weis (shot put, 51-3) and Cody Rofshus (discus, 153-6) were also first-place individual performers for the LHS boys.
MCC's Jack Thony won three events (200, 22.86; 400, 51.54; long jump, 20-10) and Austin LaFollette of SWC/E was a double winner in the hurdles (16.94 and 42.53).
Other boys' event winners were Fulda's Brock Burchill (pole vault, 12-6), Adrian's Taylor Recker (high jump, 5-10) and JCC's Darnell Taylor-Breck (triple jump, 40-4).
S/CM/C's Kylee Wells won the girls' 100 (13.17), while PA's Claire Femrite (400, 63.78), Adrian's Nicole Slater (800, 2:27.62), Windom's Holly Larson (discus, 106-8), JCC's Jessica Voehl (high jump, 4-10), Windom's Megan Muller (pole vault, 9-0) and MCC's Hannah Schmidt (long jump, 15-11) also finished first in their respective events.
JCC (4x100, 53.51), S/CM/C (4x200, 1:52.23), H-BC (4x400, 4:22.17) and Adrian (4x800, 10:00.00) won the four girls' relay races.
