Prep Softball: Cardinals sweep doubleheader

LUVERNE -- Ellen Dahl pitched two complete games and went 4-for-7 at the plate with six RBIs to lead the Luverne Cardinals to a two-game sweep of the Windom Eagles during a Southwest Conference doubleheader Saturday.

The Cardinals took Game 1 12-6, while winning the second game 9-7.

With the game tied at three runs a piece in the opener, Luverne exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the second to take an 11-4 lead and never looked back.

Meghan Vesey was credited with the loss for the Eagles after pitching a complete game and striking out six batters.

Danielle Kneip was 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and a home run to lead Luverne at the plate in Game 1.

Sami Petersen and Alyssa Fast both had two hits for the Eagles in the first game.

Dahl was also the winning pitcher in Game 2, with eight strikeouts and two walks while also going 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and four RBIs.

The Cardinals scored two runs late in the game to put Luverne up 9-7 and seal complete the sweep.

Luverne hosts Edgerton/Southwest Christian for a doubleheader today and travels to Pipestone Area for a doubleheader Tuesday. Windom hosts St. James today.

JCC wins 1 of 3 Saturday

JACKSON -- The Jackson County Central Huskies won one of three games during a tournament Saturday, defeating St. James and falling to Mankato Loyola as well as Brandon Valley.

In Game 1, the Huskies took down the Saints in five innings, outscoring St. James 13-3. Blaney Markman got the win for JCC, pitching five innings and allowing just two earned runs.

Brooke Klontz went 4-for-4 at the plate and knocked in three runs.

In Game 2, Brandon Valley got the better of Jackson County Central in six inning, winning 10-5. Moira Carlson took the loss for the Huskies, while Marita Rasche went 3-for-4 with two RBIs on the day.

In Game 3, Mankato Loyola shutout JCC over seven innings to get the 2-0 win. Klontz was the losing pitcher for the Huskies, while Brittany Woodke was the only batter for JCC with multiple hits in the game.

The Huskies travel to Windom Thursday for a doubleheader.

Pipestone Area wins home tournament

PIPESTONE -- Paige Peterson hit four home runs, including a grand slam and 17 RBIs to help the Pipestone Arrows go 3-0 Saturday at their home softball tournament.

In Game 1, the Arrows defeated LeMars, Iowa, 10-0 in six innings, with Tasia Woelber pitching a complete game and striking out 11 batters.

Peterson (2-for-2) hit two home runs and had six RBIs in the game. Cassie Evans and Tiffany Woelber both had two hits.

In Game 2, Pipestone knocked off Waterown, S.D., 11-1 in six innings.

Kelly Nettik had seven strikeouts in six innings, while Peterson smashed a grand slam on her way to picking up another six RBIs. Evans and Tiffany Woelber each had three hits.

In Game 3, the Arrows dominated the Sioux Falls Flash 13-2, while Tasia Woelber had five strikeouts in five innings.

Peterson hit her final home run and added another five RBIs to her season total. Amanda Haupert went 2-for-3 with four RBIs at the plate.

The Arrows (12-1) host Luverne in a doubleheader Tuesday.
