Prep Boys Tennis: WHS, Luverne tennis teams win easily
WORTHINGTON -- The Worthington Trojans boys' tennis team swept MACCRAY 7-0 Thursday with just one match going to three sets.
Carter Lindner led the Trojans at No. 1 singles with a two-set victory over Brandon Wieberdink, 6-4 and 6-0. Andrew Johnson defeated Philip Harms 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, while A.J. Hayenga won his match 6-2, 6-4 over Miguel Garcia. Ben Doeden rounded out the singles matches for Worthington with 6-1, 6-1 wins over Conner Hagemeyer at No. 4 singles.
Dillon Pederson and Nick Newman dropped their first set at No. 1 doubles, but came back to win the next two sets 6-1, 6-2 over MCCRAY's Andrew Dultoux and Nathan Eiseneager. At No. 2 doubles, Isaac Houselog and Kody Honius won 6-1 and 6-4, while Bryan Doeden and Levi Blanchard took their matches 7-3 (7-3) and 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Sebastian Licea and Orissa Nitibhen won their match 6-3, 6-4 at the JV level, while teammates Nick Putnam and Scottt Schnieder along with doubles pair Kenneth Garcia and Nate Gustaf won their matches 6-1, 6-2.
Worthington hosts Lac qui Parle Valley Monday in the opening round of the Section 3A Boys' Tennis tournament, with the match starting at 2 p.m.
Luverne 7, Blue Earth Area 0
LUVERNE -- The Luverne boys' tennis team finished off its regular season schedule with a win over Blue Earth Area to improve to 14-0 on the year.
Joey and Jonny Vajgrt won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 respectively to start off the day strong for the Cardinals. Dustin Deutsch won his match at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0, while Andrew Jelken won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
In doubles, Scott Nelson and Blake Ziegler were able to hold off their opponents at No. 1 singles, winning 6-3, and 6-2. Ethan Johnson and Zach Gillette won their match at No. 2 doubles 6-0, 6-1, while Matt Arends and Hunter Robinson took their match at No. 3 doubles 6-1, 6-0.
Luverne hosts Yellow-Medicine East Monday in the opening round of the Section 3A Boys' Tennis Tournament.
