Section 3AA baseball: Pipestone Area edges Marshall

MARSHALL -- Pipestone Area went eight innings Thursday to dump Southwest Conference rival Marshall 3-2 in the Section 3AA baseball tournament, proving that records don't mean much in the postseason.

With the victory, the Arrows moved to 8-11 on the season.

"It is the right time to be winning," said head coach Rick Zollner.

With the score tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Pipestone Area's Jaymes Zollner delivered a one-out single to leftfield. Trav Thomssen then hit a ground ball to shortstop which was turned into an error, putting runners on first and second base. The next batter, Eric Buffington, hit a ground ball to second base. That ball was fielded by the Marshall second baseman, who attempted to start a double play by throwing it to second base. But the ball went into leftfield and the winning run scored.

"We're used to playing a lot of close games. It just seems that we're getting a lot of breaks and things are going our way," said coach Zollner.

Josh Mabon came on in relief of Pipestone Area's starting pitcher, Justin Rops, to pick up the victory.

Pipestone Area will compete in the tournament semifinals Saturday in Marshall with a 2 p.m. game against Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta. In another game in Marshall, another Southwest Conference team -- Luverne -- will go against Fairmont in a noon start.

The finals are slated for June 4.
