Section 3A softball: E-SWC falls to KMS

MARSHALL -- Despite a solid outing by starting pitcher Tianna Top, the Edgerton/Southwest Christian Flying Dutchmen fell to the Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Fighting Saints 3-0 in the Section 3A softball championship game Thursday.

"We played cleanly today and that was what made it a closer game than last time we faced these guys," Dutchmen coach Andrew Fleischman said. "We played great defense today and Tiana (Top) always pitches really well for us."

The Dutchmen scattered five hits in the game, but were unable to push a run across the plate against the Saints.

"We got the bat on the ball a few times, but we never got solid hits with girls on base," Top said. "We would get a hit here or there, but then we would leave those runners on the base."

Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg scored a run each in the third, fourth and fifth innings on its way to securing a spot in the state tournament.

"The difference in the game was that (KMS) got a couple big two-out hits when they needed it and we just didn't happen to get any," Fleischman said. "They have a very good team and I wish them the best of luck at state."

Edgerton/Southwest Christian got hits from Jessica Menning, Tanner Gunnink and Ciara Everett in the game.

"We feel like we have a good hitting team, but they have a really good pitcher," Fleischman said. "They also didn't kick it around for us or make any mistakes."

Top went six innings on the pitcher's rubber for the Dutchmen, striking out six batters while allowing just one walk.

"I was hitting the inside corners today which I needed to do against a good hitting team like this," Top said. "I also tried to mix up my pitches a little bit today."

E/SWC finishes the season 15-7 and will graduate just four players this season, including Menning, Lindsey Van Dyke, Tara DeKam and Everett.
