VFW: Worthington places second in tournament

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. -- The Worthington VFW baseball team won three of four games to capture second place in a Saturday-Sunday tournament.

Worthington opened with a 12-7 victory over Mitchell-Murdock, Neb., then defeated Norfolk, Neb., 3-2. Following that came an 8-3 victory over Vermillion, S.D.

In the championship game, Worthington was beaten by Yankton, S.D., 3-1.

Carson Hagen, Trevor Wietzma and Logan Thuringer were credited with strong tournament performances. Wietzma went 3-for-3 in the Norfolk game with a walk-off RBI single in the seventh inning.

Worthington, 4-2, returns to action today with a doubleheader against Slayton. The first game begins at 5 p.m.
