MW Sports: NJCAA announces academic awards

WORTHINGTON -- Three Minnesota West athletes along with the Lady Jays basketball team were recognized for their academic achievements by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for the 2012-2013 seasons on Tuesday.

Rex Johnson (football), Katey Granstra (basketball, volleyball) and Alayna Hall were honored for their individual academic achievements, with Johnson finishing the year with a 3.78 GPA, Granstra earning a 3.97 GPA and Hall ending the school year with a 3.96.

More than 1,600 NJCAA student-athletes met the requirements for individual academic honors. Superior Academic Achievement (3.8+ GPA) honors went to 592 student-athletes and over 900 met the standard for Exemplary Academic Achievement (3.6+ GPA).

The Minnesota West women's basketball team finished the year with a team average GPA of 3.47, which was good enough to be recognized as academic award as a team.

Academic team accolades (3.0+ team GPA) were earned by over 500 programs with 24 winning the distinction as the Academic Teams of the Year.

This season, nearly 60,000 student-athletes competed in the NJCAA across 3,500 teams in 28 different sports.
