Sports Briefs: 35th Annual Fairmont Summer Run to take place at Fairmont HS

FAIRMONT -- Runners and walkers are invited to participate in the 35th Annual Fairmont Summer Run on Saturday, July 27.

This year the race will take place at Fairmont High School at 900 Johnson Street.

The 5 mile run begins at 8:30 a.m. with the two mile run/walk set to start at 9:30 a.m. The 1/4 mile run (new this year for ages nine and under) will begin at 9:55 a.m., and the 1/2 mile run (for ages 13 and under) will begin at 10:00 a.m. The awards program is scheduled to start at 10:15 a.m.

The 5 and 2 mile races will begin and conclude on the high school track with part of the race taking place on the streets and asphalt trails of Fairmont. The 1/4 and 1/2 mile runs will take place on the track.

Participants are encouraged to pre-register by July 23rd and can do so at Runners may also pre-register in person at the CER office at 714 Victoria Street in Fairmont (Fairmont Elementary School).

Race day registration at Fairmont High School will begin at 7:30 a.m. and close 10 minutes prior to each race.

Worthington FC U14, U17 qualify for State Tournament

WORTHINGTON -- The Worthington FC U14 and U17 soccer teams qualified for the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association Summer State Tournament by winning the Southwest District Qualifying held in Fairmont this weekend.

Both teams will be playing against a team from the Metro area next weekend for a shot to play in the State Championship game on July 24.

The U12 team finished second in the tournament. The U12s still have an opportunity to reach the state tournament, but would need to win a play-out round against the other four Districts' second place finishers. The play-out round starts Tuesday in Hudson, Wisconsin.

18U Storm win Fairmont tourney

FAIRMONT -- The Worthington 18U Storm fast pitch softball team took home first place at the Fairmont softball tournament after picking up a pair of wins Saturday.

The Storm shut out Rapid City 12-0 in the first game of the day, with Christine Kazemba picking up the win.

Kazemba struck out 10 batters in the four-inning contest.

In Game 2 on Saturday, the Storm snuck by Fairmont to get an 8-7 win for the championship.

Kazemba once again came away with the win, striking out seven batters in the victory. Paige Kinley led the offense with three hits in the game.

Worthington travels to the fast pitch softball state tournament in Monticello on Friday.
