Legion baseball: Post 5 to open with St. Peter

WORTHINGTON — The Worthington American Legion baseball team is seeded No. 2 in the double-elimination postseason tournament set to begin next week.

Worthington Post 5 will open in a 4 p.m. game Thursday, July 25, in New Ulm against seventh-seeded St. Peter.

The entire tournament will be played in New Ulm, with games every day beginning July 25 through Sunday, July 28.

New Ulm Gold is the No. 1 seed in the eight-team tournament field. Sleepy Eye is No. 3. Fairmont is seeded fourth, followed by Mankato National, Mankato American, St. Peter and Woodbury.

New Ulm sports a 17-7 record and Worthington is 14-3. Post 5 coach Todd Rogers noted on Wednesday that his team actually has a better winning percentage than the New Ulm squad, but he expressed happiness at his team’s No. 2 ranking. He likes his bracket and believes Post 5 is in a good position do to well.

“We’ve played some really good baseball teams, and we played some pretty good baseball ourselves,” Rogers said.
