Luverne falls to St. James at Districts

MILROY — St. James picked up a walkoff win over the Luverne Legion Post 123 in the eighth inning to knock Luverne out of the Division II, District 2 American Legion Baseball tournament Saturday in Milroy. 

Luverne opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, but St. James took the lead in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. Post 123 tied the game in the third.

Neither team scored again until St. James combined a hit batter with a double to the outfield to score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Sam Carlson recorded the win for St. James, while Gunnar Olsen took the loss for Luverne after giving up the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Olsen came in to relieve starting pitcher Josh Slieter, who went seven innings and struck out four batters while walking two.

Skyler Wenninger (3-for-4, two runs) and Slieter (4-for-4, two RBIs) combined to score Luverne’s two runs.

Luverne finished the season with a 9-4 record.
