Amateur baseball: Luverne finishes off Fairmont

LUVERNE — The Luverne Redbirds needed just two games to get their favored seeding for the state amateur baseball tournament.

Host Luverne defeated Fairmont 7-3 Friday night in an impressive offensive showing to win their best-of-three Region 13C series. Both teams had already qualified for the 2013 state tournament, but with Friday’s victory the Redbirds grasped a first-round bye.

All nine starters had a hit for Luverne Friday. Shortstop Skyler Wenninger was outstanding both at the plate and in the field, going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. He also made a great diving catch for the third out in the fifth inning that prevented a Fairmont run that would have tied the game at 4-4.

Teammate Cody Christensen also went 2-for-3 and hit a two-run double in the eighth inning that finished the evening’s scoring.

Fairmont collected a pair of home runs in the game. Righthanded hitter Adam Schmidt, who was 2-for-4, led off the second inning with a solo homer to the opposite field. He also tripled in the game. The Martins’ Max Waletich, a lefty, led off the fourth inning with a home run over the rightfield fence.

Andrew DeBoer started for Luverne and went four and a third innings. He walked none, struck out three and allowed six of the Martins’ eight hits. Brian Beuning got the win, pitching four and two-thirds innings in impressive fashion. Beuning allowed only a pair of infield hits while walking none and striking out seven.

Brandon Alfson took the loss for Fairmont, pitching seven-plus innings. Scott Chirpich pitched the eighth.

Luverne opened the series with a 13-4 victory Wednesday.
