Volleyball: Place lifts SWU


HILLS —Riding the 18-kill performance of junior Courtney Place, who already has more than 1,000 kills in her varsity career, Southwestern United swept Hills-Beaver Creek in a Red Rock Conference volleyball match Tuesday evening.

Game scores were 25-14, 25-6 and 25-13.

Hailey Schumacher put up 24 set assists for the Wildcats (7-4, 4-0), also delivering the ball to Andrea Hinkeldey and Kailey Wendland for six and five kills, respectively

Autumn Hinkeldey (12-of-14, four aces), Andrea Hinkeldey (19-of-20, three aces) and Rachel Mathias (9-of-9, one ace) all had good nights serving for SWU.

Place and Mathias each contributed six blocks for the Wildcats, while Andrea Hinkeldey came up with five digs.

The Patriots (1-7, 0-3) were led at the net by Kelli Esselink (five kills, five blocks).

Marissa Kracht and Megan Westrum had seven and six set assists, respectively, for H-BC, while Tori Bork had a match-high eight digs.

Madison Fick contributed five digs and a pair of blocks for the Patriots, who travel to Mountain Lake Thursday.

MLA 3, Ellsworth 0

ELLSWORTH —Getting solid contributions from lots of players, Mountain Lake Area defeated Ellsworth in three straight sets.

Game scores were 25-21, 25-13 and 25-17.

Signey Stoesz (19-of-22) and Carmen Syverson (12-of-12) both served a pair of aces for the Wolverines, while Rachel Dukes (15 set assists, two blocks), Mikayla Falk (13 digs), Jordan Syverson (eight kills) and Maggie Wahdan (six kills) also helped the Wolverines (3-6, 1-1) maintain control.

Stoesz contributed 11 digs and Carmen Syverson had a trio of blocks for MLA’s well-balanced attack.

Ellsworth (2-5, 2-2) received three ace serves and a trio of kills from Emily Chapa, while Alexa Huisman (seven digs, four kills) and Hannah Mulder (11 digs, three kills) also had good all-around matches.

Danielle DeBeer (five set assists), Brenna Kramer (seven digs) and Heidi Nolte (four set assists) were other contributors for the Panthers, who travel to Slayton Thursday to tangle with Murray County Central.

MLA hosts Hills-Beaver Creek Thursday.

Adrian 3, Fulda

ADRIAN —Senior outside hitter Corie Reckamp smacked seven kills and came up with a match-high 28 digs to help Adrian sweep Fulda.

Game scores were 25-21, 25-17 and 25-15.

Sydnie Wiess put up 14 set assists for the Dragons (2-3, 1-1) and Christina Loonan had 18 digs.

Elizabeth Thier (four kills), Bailey Grussing (three ace serves) and Shelly Loosbrock (two aces) were other key conributors for Adrian. Grussing and Reckamp each had a pair of ace blocks.

Leading Fulda at the net were Alli Vanden Bosch and Courtney Tiesler with eight and seven kills, respectively.

Freshman Randi Tiesler contributed 21 set assists and delivered five ace serves for the Raiders, while Dani Hermeling had 19 digs.

Both squads host conference matches Thursday, as Westbrook-Walnut Grove is at Fulda and Red Rock Central travels to Adrian.

H-LP 3, GTRA 0

LAKE PARK, Iowa — Harris-Lake Park swept Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven Ayrshire on scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-17.

Noreen Morrow led the way with 19 kills, with Miranda Brueggeman adding nine.

Macy Gunderson had 26 set assists and 22 digs. Grace Heikens and Grace Winters each had nine serving points while Gunderson and Brueggeman added eight apiece.

For Gunderson, the match was special. She achieved her 2,000th set assist with the fourth point of the first set.

“It’s a great accomplishment for Macy, the first time in school history,” said H-LP head coach Daryl Meyer. “She’s worked hard. Setters usually go by the wayside. With 2,000 set assists in four years, that’s a huge accomplishment.”

MCC 3, Edgerton 0

EDGERTON —Visiting Murray County Central made short work of host Edgerton, advancing to 5-1 on the season. Game scores were 25-4, 25-10 and 25-5.

Kristi Bose had eight attack kills for the Rebels and teammate Lindsey Barritt added four. Hannah Schmidt had 11 digs.

Tanner Gunnink had two kills for the Flying Dutchmen in the losing cause. Teammates Jordyn Smit and Kameron Kroh had two set assists apiece. Smit, Kroh and Mia Wassink were all 3-for-4 serving while Kaitlin VanRuler had seven digs and Karlie Brockberg two blocks.

SWC 3, W-WG 1

WESTBROOK—After a hard-fought first set win, the Westbrook- Walnut Grove Chargers lost three consecutive sets to Southwest Christian, as the Eagles won 3-1 in Westbrook.

Set scores were 27-29, 25-18, 25-20 and 29-27.

Leading SWC in serving was Sydney Esselink, who was 18-20 with four aces, Kassydi Vreeman (10-11, three aces) and Tianna Top, who was 14-17 with two aces. Ann Pater led the Eagles in kills with 11, and Top also had 11 kills. Pater also led her team in blocks, with five. Esselink also finished the game with 37 set assists.

For W-WG, Cassidy Mischke was 19-20 with three aces, Madison Takle was 18-19 with six aces, and Abby Herding finished with two aces, going 17-17 from behind the service line. Herding had 36 set assists on the evening. Dayna Comnick had 20 kills for the Chargers, and Liz Woelber had 24 digs, followed by Comnick, who had 21. Jordaan Joel had one ace block for W-WG.
