Girls tennis: Mankato East tops Worthington in section opener
MANKATO -- Claudia Canas fought back to win her No. 4 singles match Tuesday for the Worthington Trojans, but Mankato East won the war, 6-1, in the first round of the Section 2AA team tennis tournament in Mankato.
“Tough match,” WHS head coach Mike Marquardt remarked in an email message. “Controlled by East from the start. Claudia was able to win the second and third set, but otherwise a really strong team. They didn’t give us any second chances.”
Canas dropped the first set in her singles match 4-6 to the Cougars’ Brenna Letourneau, then bounced back to win the next two, 6-2, 6-2. Her teammates weren’t able to gain control of their matches, however.
Mankato East’s Hannah Weng defeated Worthington’s Anna Kill 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2, Kezia Kim was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Kelly Newman. And at No. 3, Katelyn Flatgard defeated the Trojans’ Jamie Newman 6-0, 6-2.
East also won in straight sets at doubles.
Gabi Bruner and Shoshi Bruner won 6-0, 6-1 over the Trojans’ Catalina Nguyen and Kessey Aljets at No. 1 doubles. Camryn Steinberg and Jadyn Weckwerth won 6-2, 6-0 over Maggie Putnam and Chloe Bents at No 2. And at No. 3, the Cougars’ Hailey Reiten and Sydney Dressen won 6-3, 6-3 over Worthington’s Britten Fauskee and Cynthia Salksavath.
The Trojans’ next action is Oct. 13 in section individual play.
