Friday boys basketball: Chargers clinch first conference crown in 20 years

WESTBROOK -- With a decisive Red Rock Conference victory over Edgerton, Westbrook-Walnut Grove clinched its first conference championship in 20 years.

The Chargers, who last won in 1998, improve to 22-3 overall and 14-1 in the conference.

Matt DePrez scored 18 points to go with eight rebounds and three blocks for the Chargers, who had a total of 12 players score in the game. Tyson Elzenga had 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Parker Freeburg added 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Flying Dutchmen were led by Trey Gilbertson’s 24 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks, while Landon Buckridge had 12 points.

W-WG is at Mountain Lake Area on Monday.

HILLS -- Jacob Van Dam led a group of five players in double figures to lead Southwest Christian to a victory over Hills-Beaver Creek.

Trey Huisken scored 18 points, while AJ Vanderby had 14, Parker Pooima scored 12 and Logan Walhof had 11 for the Eagles.

H-BC was led by Preston Wilhelmi, who scored 34 points. Josh Kueter had 17 points and 15 rebounds, while Jax Wyson had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

LAMBERTON -- Red Rock Central used a 14-2 run to close the first half in a victory over Fulda.

The Falcons (15-10, 10-6) were trailing 22-9, but trailed by just a point (24-23) at the break.

Brady Rasmussen scored 19 points and dished out five assists, while Spencer Halland had 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Falcons. Logan Pankonin scored 13 points to go with three rebounds and three assists.

Fulda was led by Matthias Kunerth, who scored 16 points. Leighton Gehl added 10.

RRC is the No. 5 seed in the Section 3A South tournament and will play No. 4 seeded Murray County Central March 3 in Worthington in the tournament.

MINNEOTA -- Three players scored in double figures to lead Luverne to a non-conference win against Minneota.

Cole Claussen scored a team-best 13 points, while Derek Lundgren had 12 points and Riley Siebenahler had 10 points.

Minneota was led by Thomas Hennen, who scored 14 points.

ADRIAN -- Marcus Boyd poured in 30 points on 12-of-16 shooting from the field to boost the Wolverines to a victory.

Sam Paulson added 16 points for Mountain Lake, while Weston Osland had 15. Drake Harder also grabbed a game-best seven rebounds.

Ryan Wieneke led the Dragons with 22 points. Christian Weidert chipped in offensively with 11 points, and Skylar Polzine had 10.

SLAYTON -- Cooper Hansen had a balanced night with 11 points, six assists and six steals to help Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, the top seed in the upcoming Section 3A South tourney, to a road win over Murray County Central.

Westin Kirk topped R-T-R in scoring with 19 points, while Garrett Kern also had 11.

Tyler Groves was the lone Rebels player in double figures scoring with 11 points and also snared a game-high 10 rebounds.

ELLSWORTH -- Eli Fest had 14 points and six assists and Malaki Walker added 13 points as visiting Heron Lake-Okabena got past Ellsworth.

For the Panthers, Brandon Kramer had 19 points and eight rebounds, and Grant Jansma contributed 17 points. Zach Buntjer had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Noah Kruse passed for six assists.
