Bluejays complete run to national men's basketball tourney

COON RAPIDS -- Minnesota West is heading to the national tournament.

Entering the NJCAA Region XIII tournament as a No. 4 seed didn’t bother the Bluejays as they defeated every team in their path.

And on Sunday, Anoka-Ramsey was the final team standing in their way.

On Sunday, MW outscored the Golden Rams 51-24 in the second half to pull away for an 89-62 victory.

The 2018 NJCAA National Championship Tournament  is March 15-17 in Loch Sheldrake, N.Y.

Alex Brown finished with 20 points, 13 rebounds and five assists for the Bluejays, while Alex Preston and Ki’Shawn Syph each had 15 points. DeShawn Pickford had 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Kuol Chol scored 11 points to go with six rebounds and three assists. Tyrone Walker also scored 11 points for West.

Kevin Schramm scored 22 points to lead the Golden Rams, while Justin Castro and Chris Morgan each had 13 points.

With the game tied at 38 at halftime, the Bluejay shooters came alive in the second half, starting on a 19-2 run. Brown was 3-for-4 from behind the arc, while Preston was 3-for-5 from 3 in the second half and Walker hit both his long-range shots as Minnesota West shot 60 percent in the final 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the Bluejay defense held the Rams to just 27 percent from the floor in the second half.
