COLLEGE BASEBALL: Bluejays drop two at Metrodome
MINNEAPOLIS -- Opening its season in the Metrodome, the Minnesota West baseball team dropped a pair of games against Mesabi Range Wednesday morning.
MW fell in a hole early in Game 1 and lost 9-2, before losing the lead in a 5-1 defeat in Game 2.
"Defensively, we made some smart plays," MW coach Jeff Linder said. "I was really impressed with the focus and the intensity of the players. For our first outing, I'm pleased, but we need to get better."
Starting at midnight and playing until 4 a.m., the teams were able to play two games in front of five sets of Bluejay parents and nine members of the student body.
"I think the guys really enjoyed playing in the dome," Linder said.
In the first game, Mesabi Range jumped out to a four-run lead in the first inning, before MW scored its first run of the season in the third frame.
However, with three runs in the sixth, MR went on to a 9-2 victory.
Ryan Rasche suffered the loss for MW, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits while walking two and striking out five in four innings.
Marcus Schultz, who hit a ball off the 408 sign in straightaway center field, finished with two hits in the game.
Corey Polz added a pair of hits for MW, while Trevor Mills and Tommy Berg each had an RBI.
In the second game of the morning, MW had a 1-0 lead after the third inning.
MR would respond with five unanswered in a 5-1 victory.
MW had three hits in the game, as Marcus Schultz, Matt Schultz (RBI) and Travis Donelan each had a hit.
Jamison Kleinsasser suffered the loss on the hill. He allowed three runs (no earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out six in five innings.
MW is scheduled to host Hibbing Friday before heading to the crossover tournament in Austin Saturday and Sunday.
The Bluejays will then travel to Mt. Marty Monday.
