VERMILLION, S.D. —- Former Worthington High School cross country star Mubarik Musa raced to an impressive second-place finish at the 2013 Summit League Cross Country Meet at Fort Wayne, Indiana, Nov. 2.

Running for the University of South Dakota Coyotes, Musa clocked a time of 24 minutes, 57.41 seconds over an 8,000-meter (five miles) course at the Hefner Complex.

A sophomore, Musa paced the Coyotes to a near championship performance in the eight-team meet, as USD finished within one point of rival South Dakota State for the title.

SDSU, led by individual champion Trent Lusignan (24:49.42), won the team title with 41 points, while USD tallied 42 on finish places 2-4-7-12-17. IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis) was third with 51 points, followed by North Dakota State (85), Western Illinois (130) and Fort Wayne (181). Musa, a three-year distance running ace for the Trojans from 2009-2012, will run with the Coyotes at the NCAA Midwest Regional CC Meet in Ames, Iowa Friday, seeking qualification for the NCAA National Meet in Terre Haute, Indiana Nov. 23.

Musa won the Minnesota Class A state cross country race as a sophomore in 2009 and claimed the state title in the 1,600-meter run in track the following spring.

This year, at USD, Musa has been the Coyotes’ lead runner in every race and had a trio of top-10 finishes in major meets prior to his stellar performance at Fort Wayne.

Musa’s previous best 8-K time had been a 25:08.62, which was the eighth-best recorded in the Summit League this season.
