College basketball: Minnesota West wins twice Saturday

WORTHINGTON — Derek Buysse scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Minnesota West Bluejays thumped St. Cloud Tech 67-55 in a college men’s basketball game Saturday at the Center for Health and Wellness.

In the game that preceded the Bluejays’ victory, the Minnesota West women beat Mount Marty JV 83-72.

The West men are 17-8 on the season and the women are 19-5. The teams return to action at Worthington on Wednesday against Rochester, with the Lady Jays tipping off at 6 p.m. and the men following at 8 p.m. The game with Rochester will be the Jays’ final home date of the regular season, as both teams finish on the road at Riverland in Austin Feb. 22 before postseason competition begins on March 1. Both the Lady Jays and Bluejays are assured of a tournament bid, with only the seedings and matchups yet to be finalized.

Bluejays 67, St. Cloud Tech 55

Minnesota West led throughout, and the biggest difference was at the free throw line. St. Cloud Tech converted just seven of 15 free throws but the Bluejays made 28 of 37, including 19 of 25 in the second half.

Buysse, who was three-for-six from three-point range, was seven-for-eight at the line. Teammate Jackson Seitzinger who finished with 11 points, got all 11 of his points at the free throw line (he attempted 14). Cyrell Hodges also scored in double figures for Minnesota West, getting 14 points.

Ja’Pree Murry had five assists for the Jays. Seitzinger had three steals.

Neither team burned the nets from the field, as West connected on just 29 percent of its field goal tries and St. Cloud Tech made 36 percent of its own.

Riley West scored 11 points to pace the visitors while Scott Nystrom and Michael Wiese added 10 apiece.

Both teams had 42 rebounds.

Lady Jays 83, Mt. Marty 72

Twenty-four points by Lydia Kemper and Tiffany Gehl helped the Lady Jays down Mt. Marty. The hosts, who outrebounded the visitors 48-43, scored 18 points off turnovers compared to their rivals’ six.

Kemper made 10 of 11 free throws on the day and Gehl converted 11 of 24 field goals into points. Lindsey Drooger, who led the Lady Jays with 10 assists, had 15 points.

Brittney Hermeling had nine rebounds for West and Kristen Andersen had eight.

Five players scored in double figures for Mt. Marty JV. Kellie Winckler had 15, Sam Blake 14, Jill Jandreau 12 and Brittni Bormann and Allison Berry 11 apiece.

Minnesota West made 17 of 33 field goals in the first half (51.5 percent) to take a 46-40 lead into intermission.
