College football: Mesabi Range edges Minnesota West in OT

VIRGINIA -- Going north for the second long road trip in two weeks, the Minnesota West Community and Technical College football team had a different result from its first outing Saturday. Mesabi Range defeated the Bluejays 28-25 in overtime.

Minnesota West was impressive in its season opener, beating Central Lakes College in Brainerd 36-12 in a game where the Jays led 36-0 in the second half. In Week Two, however, in a matchup of 1-0 squads, host Mesabi Range eked out a win.

After four quarters, the two teams played to a 25-25 tie. Range's sophomore place kicker Connor Kusic deadlocked the game with a field goal at the end of regulation, then he used his leg again with an overtime field goal for the win.

Minnesota West quarterback Andrew Ortiz, who was named Western Division offensive player of the week following the Central Lakes game, scored Saturday's first touchdown on a 14-yard run. After Mesabi Range tied the score at 7-7 with a touchdown and PAT, West's Brandon Jackson scored again for the visitors on a 10-yard carry. Mesabi Range tied the score again later, 14-14, before Caleb Tinklenberg converted one of three field goal attempts on the day -- from 44 yards, giving the Jays a lead again. Teammate Khaileb Desmond's 55-yard touchdown run, and ensuing 2-point conversion, put West up comfortably at 25-14. But with 36 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Mesabi Range scored again and tacked on a 2-point conversion, and a late fourth-quarter 24-yard field goal set up the overtime scenario.

Ortiz completed 15 of 25 passes for 149 yards and rushed 18 times for 29 yards. Desmond carried 24 times for 167 yards to lead the Minnesota West rushing attack.

The Jays finished with 337 yards of total offense to Mesabi Range's 315.
