State golf: Hamman seventh, Groves 12th; Worthington's Koepsell 48th, Weg 51st
Abby Hamman of Murray County Central finished seventh overall in the Class A girls standings of the Minnesota state golf tournament Wednesday, compiling rounds of 42 and 44 strokes on the tourney’s second day at Pebble Creek in Becker.
Hamman, a sophomore who shot a 37 and a 41 on Tuesday, finished with 164 strokes.
Rachel Halvorson of Lac qui Parle Valley was the overall winner with a 155.
Tyler Groves shot a 158 for the MCC boys, finishing 12th overall in the Class A individual standings. But his Rebel team could only rise as high as seventh among the eight competing squads.
The MCC girls placed sixth in the team results.
For the Worthington boys, the Class AA competition at Ridges of Sand Creek in Jordan continued to frustrate. Their first-day total of 348 forced them to begin Wednesday eighth among the eight competing teams. They were unable to move up on the second day, finishing with a 693 score.
One of the Trojans' team members was unable to compete in the tournament.
On the Class AA girls’ side, the Trojans’ Anneke Weg carded a 183 at Ridges, placing her in a tie for 51st. She improved from rounds of 50 and 45 that she carded on Tuesday, with a 43 and 45 on Day Two.
Her coach, Paul Barduson, said his star senior -- who will play a fall and spring schedule at Southwest Minnesota State University at the next level -- had trouble reading the greens at Sand Creek. But her ball-striking was solid.
“She hit the ball really well,” Barduson said. “And she got a good experience about what the best players in Minnesota are all about, and what she’ll be facing next fall.”
Paige Pigman of Windom Area finished with a 187 in the Class AA field.
Holy Family Catholic won the Class AA boys team tournament with an even 600 strokes. Next was Detroit Lakes with 603, Red Wing 619, Cloquet-Esko 622, Blue Earth Area 627, St. Cloud Cathedral 634, Totino-Grace 646, and Worthington.
Ben Koepsell led Worthington’s boys with a 159, getting a 38 and a 41 on Day Two. He finished in a tie for 48th place.
Other WHS boys: Lucas Boever 166, Jacob Prunty 169, Zach Wietzema 200 and Preston Thavixay 205.
Tylan Porath of Windom Area had a 181 total.
Sleepy Eye United and Mounds Park Academy shared the Class A boys championship with 641. North Woods had 658, Ottertail Central 682, Lac qui Parle Valley 700, Fertile-Beltrami 710, Murray County Central 730 and Kingsland 764.
Jack Pierson carded a 180 for the MCC boys. Other Rebel finishers included Cole Ahlers 193 and Dawson Tutt 199.
Cory Renneke of Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda shot a 178 over the two days. Westbrook-Walnut Grove’s Andrew Quade shot a 179. Mitchell Veld of Adrian had 186. And HL-O/F’s Payton Marquardt finished with a 189.
Murray County Central totaled 781 strokes in the girls Class A team competition. Lac qui Parle won it all with a 714. Fillmore Central was close behind with a 715, followed by Park Christian with 723, BOLD 726, Springfield 764, MCC, Badger/Greenbush-Middle River 811 and Braham 906.
Alexia Kemper of Adrian finished with a 182 total, tying her for 23rd place. Tess Van Maanen of Hills-Beaver Creek had a 199 and Jennifer Schelhaas of Southwest Christian/Edgerton had a 206.
Other MCC girls: Amber Boock 199, Paige Behrends 205, Vanessa Dahlgren 213, Ciera Tutt 223 and Kylie Frisk 239.
