Men's college basketball: Bluejays lose in tourney opener

COON RAPIDS — Cold shooting hampered the Minnesota West men’s basketball team Friday in the first round of the Region 13 tournament at Anoka-Ramsey Community and Technical College.

The Bluejays made good on only 24 percent of their shots in the first half against Central Lakes College and fell behind 37-20 at intermission. Things went better for the Jays in the second half, but not better enough in a 78-63 setback.

“We did not shoot very well at all in the first half,” said West head coach Justin Heckenlaible. “The second half we played much harder, much better. We just dug ourselves into too big a hole.”

The Bluejays managed to pull within eight points of Central Lakes as they hit 44 percent of their second half field goals. But their setback forced them into the tournament’s consolation bracket, where they will face Northland today at 10 a.m.

Northland lost to Rochester in another first round game Friday.

Minnesota West, 18-10, was led Friday by Jackson Seitzinger with 16 points, Cyrell Hodges with 10 and Cody Harris with 10.

Bryan Gichaba scored 21 points for Central Lakes, now 17-11 on the year.
