CROSS COUNTRY: Fairmont sweeps WHS in cross country meet

Michael Brauer/Daily Globe Worthington and Fairmont start Friday's cross country race on the track at Mahoney Field in Fairmont.

FAIRMONT -- Mubarik Musa and O.J. Ojullu took the top two spots at Friday's dual cross country meet, and the Worthington Trojans and the Fairmont Cardinals were separated by just one point in the boys' two-mile race.

Fairmont won the boys' dual with 28 points, just edging Worthington's total of 29 points.

Fairmont also won the girls' race with 26 points. Worthington finished with 37 points.

Both the boys' and girls' races were two-mile events which started and ended on the track at Mahoney Field, just prior to the start of the Worthington-Fairmont season-opening football game.

"It was a lot of fun and a neat experience for our kids to run in an atmosphere like we had," Worthington head coach Ken Henkels said. "There was a good crowd in the stands for the football game, and they gave the runners great support throughout the races."

Musa and Ojullu ran side-by-side for much of the boys' race and clocked times of 10:14 and 10:28 to place first and second, respectively, to lead the Trojans.

Worthington's Aaron Grafing ran a time of 11:10 to finish fifth, while Kreguto Okello (ninth, 11:35) and Michael Patten (12th, 12:03) completed the Trojans' scoring.

Jeremy Clark (17th, 13:19) and Gordy Moore (19th, 13:46) were Worthington's sixth and seventh runners, respectively.

Lydia Kemper, Kaitlin Gerber and Allison Jaycox led the Trojan girls with a 2-3-5 finish.

Kemper ran a time of 12:44 to place second, while Gerber was third with a time of 13:01. Jaycox was clocked at 13:10 and finished fifth.

Stephanie Jaycox (12th, 13:52) and Sarah Cham (15th, 14:25) rounded out Worthington's scoring, while Stephanie Behrens (16th, 14:27) and Deann Naab (17th, 14:29) were the sixth and seventh Trojans to enter the chute.

"It's always nice when you can run with and compete with a quality program like Fairmont," Henkels said. "We had some nice performances and we had some fun, so overall it was a great experience for us."
