PREP FOOTBALL: Windom improves to 2-0 with shutout victory

PIPESTONE -- In a game in which both teams played great defense, the Windom Eagles came up with one offensive touchdown Friday night and scored on an interception return to win their Southwest Conference opener over Pipestone Area, blanking the Arrows, 12-0.

The Eagles (2-0, 1-0) sustained a third-quarter drive -- which was kept alive by a 21-yard run by quarterback Spenser Kipfer, who later tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jake Holt.

Windom's Jessy Grove, who rushed 14 times for 37 yards, ran back an interception -- aided by several key blocks -- 67 yards for the Eagles' second touchdown.

"That was an exciting play -- what a run and team effort by the Eagles," exclaimed Windom's first-year coach Travis Bretzman. "Jessy broke a bunch of tackles and our whole defense got involved in the return, throwing blocks all over the place. When Grove reached the end zone, there were 10 other white jerseys that crossed the goal line, too."

Lee Holt had a pair of catches for 30 yards to help Windom's offense, which was unable to mount a threat against PA's defense until the third-quarter drive.

Windom travels to New Ulm for a non-conference game Friday, while the Arrows (0-2, 0-1) will be in Worthington for the Trojans' Homecoming game.
