IOWA FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Orabs improve to 3-0 with 20-11 win

ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- Following a low-scoring first half which saw the hosts put the only points on the board, the Sheldon Orabs' rushing attack pounded out 241 second-half yards en route to a 20-11 non-district victory over MOC-Floyd Valley.

The Orabs, who improve to 3-0 and open district play Friday at home against Estherville, had a pair of 100-yard rushers with Chris Balster (3-for-7 passing for 24 yards) carrying the ball 20 times for 154 yards and a touchdown while Hunter McDonald scampered seven times for 103 yards and two touchdowns.

Trailing 3-0 (MOC-FV kicked a second-quarter touchdown) in the third quarter, Balster put Sheldon ahead for good with a 52-yard scoring run at the 10:16 mark. Zach Kleinwolterink kicked in the extra point to give the Orabs a 7-3 lead.

At 6:56 of the fourth quarter, McDonald scored his first touchdown to make it 14-3 on a 27-yard run (Kleinwolterink kick for the extra point).

MOC-FV struck back with a score two minutes later to make it 14-11 but McDonald iced the game with a 49-yard run to paydirt to give the Orabs a 20-11 margin.

Sheldon ran the ball 45 times in the contest for a total of 326 yards.

Travis Nelson (six rushes for 33 yards), Matt Dykstra (seven rushes for 18 yards) and Cody Hatting (five rushes for 18 yards) also received touches for the Orabs' ground game.

Dykstra and Joe Kuiper (two sacks) led a stout Sheldon defense that held the Dutchmen to 179 total yards of offense (116 rushing, 63 passing).

HAWARDEN, Iowa -- The Sibley-Ocheyedan Generals held West Sioux scoreless in the first half while doing all of their scoring in the the first two quarters to gain a 18-7 road win in a non-district football game.

Casey Hertz (14 rushes for 56 yards) opened the scoring for S-O at 3:54 of the first quarter with a two-yard touchdown plunge.

Owen Wiese (5-for-10 passing for 83 yards with two interceptions) scored a 4-yard rushing touchdown at 8:21 of the second quarter while Dylan Brockshus completed the Generals' scoring 24 seconds later at the 7:57 mark with a 33-yard fumble return for a touchdown that ran the score to 18-0.

Ethan Stofferan had a nice game rushing for S-O (1-1) with 88 yards on 19 touches while Harrison Feldkamp caught three passes for 17 yards and Kelly Schoneman (one defensive interception) had two grabs for 69 yards.

Defensively, Stofferan had four solo tackles, seven assists and an interception while Brockshus recorded two solos, five assists and the fumble-recovery touchdown.

ROCK VALLEY, Iowa -- Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley outgained Central Lyon/George-Little Rock, 293 yards to 190 and scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to give the Lions their first loss of the season.

CL/G-LR scored first on a two-yard run by quarterback Ross Ackerman with 2:19 to play in the first quarter. Terron Geerdes kicked the point after, giving the Lions a 7-0 lead.

The Nighthawks tied the score in the second period and -- after a scoreless third quarter -- took a 14-7 lead early in the fourth.

With 5:17 to play in the game, the Lions crossed the goal line on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Ackerman to Kyler Huisman (three catches, 33 yards).

The Nighthawks stopped CL/G-LR's two-point PAT try and then scored two more touchdowns to put the game out of reach.

Ryan McCarty had a second-quarter pass interception for the Lions and gained 46 yards on 12 carries, while Geerdes picked up 28 yards on nine carries.

Ackerman was five-of-15 passing for 83 yards, with Eric Schilling (47 yards) and Matt Nagel (16 yards) coming up with the other two catches.

Taylor Zeutenhorst scored two touchdowns for the Nighthawks (2-0), who gained 136 yards on the ground and passed for 157 more.

The Lions (2-1) were held to just 94 yards rushing on 36 carries.

CL/G-LR has a bye this week before hosting Estherville-Lincoln Central Sept. 16.
