PREP GIRLS' SOCCER: Fairmont earns 2-0 victory against WHS

FAIRMONT -- The Worthington girls' soccer team's defense has come a long way in the team's recent games.

Unfortunately, the team's improvements on defense have coincided with some struggles on offense.

The Trojans' defense came through again by keeping Fairmont scoreless in the first half of Monday's game, but ultimately the Cardinals won by a 2-0 score.

"We played well," WHS head coach Smitty Ektnitphong said. "I kind of expected that we were going to come out playing hard because Fairmont is kind of an innocent rivalry for us. Last year we were really successful against them, we beat them a couple of times, and this year they got us this time around."

Worthington managed eight shots on goal compared to 12 shots on goal for Fairmont, but despite a strong performance by WHS goalkeeper Alivia Rowley the Cardinals were able to score twice early in the second half.

FHS' Katie Nicoson netted a goal seven minutes into the second half on a high shot that in a somewhat fluky fashion fell through Rowley's arms, bounced through her legs and into the net.

"We played so well up to that point and I think it took a toll out of the girls a little bit," Ektnitphong said. "They didn't get nervous or panic or anything like that, but the second goal came really quickly."

Three minutes after their first score the Cardinals struck again, with Caitlin Parsley setting up a goal by Taylor Daniel.

Despite the loss, Ektnitphong praised the way his players performed in the contest, and was particularly pleased with the good attitude they held throughout.

"I know that we lost two to nothing, but it doesn't seem that way," Ektnitphong said. "They made some good strides this evening and I'm really glad to see the results."

Worthington will play on the road today against Mankato West.

"We have a tough opponent coming up next game," Ektnitphong said. "It's not going to be an easy opponent, but I feel really comfortable going up to Mankato West (today) knowing that we have nothing to lose, but gain. I think we're going to come out and fight hard and it could be some sort of surprise."
