PREP VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: SSC defeats Falcons in key conference match

JEFFERS -- Tuesday's volleyball clash between Southwest Star Concept and Red Rock Central came down to the wire, but the Quasars prevailed by a 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 21-25, 15-13 score to remain atop the Red Rock Conference in a contest that also featured a pink-out for RRC's Coaches vs. Cancer night.

Courtney Place was a key player for SSC on the night. She had 26 kills, 12 digs, 26 serve receptions, two blocks and was 17-for-18 serving for seven points.

Maddie Rasche (18-for-19 serving for seven points, 34 serve receptions) and Mandy Henkels (38 serve receptions) had 28 and 21 digs, respectively, for the Quasars and Alisa Carlson had 12 digs. Alyssa Hendrickson (19-for-19 serving for 10 points) had 11 kills, Autumn Hinkeldey notched eight kills and Rachel Mathias had two solo blocks.

The Falcons were led by Chloe Arfsten, who had 10 kills, 20 digs and was 23-for-25 serving with four aces. Tegan Derickson (23 digs) was 10-for-11 serving with three aces, Katie Larsen (eight kills) was 13-for-14 serving with two aces, Klarissa Larsen had a team-high 23 kills, Kendra Hagert had eight kills and Alison Kircher had 19 digs and 39 set assists.

RRC (9-6, 5-2) will play at Round Lake-Brewster on Thursday and the Quasars (16-8, 7-0) will play at Westbrook-Walnut Grove the same night.

Luverne 3, West Central, S.D. 0

LUVERNE -- Luverne earned a sweep with three well-played games against interstate opponent West Central High School of Hartford, S.D.

Game scores were 25-15, 25-15 and 25-17.

Cheyenne Hemme ran the Cardinals' attack well by going 55-for-56 setting with 20 set assists. She was also 10-for-12 serving with two aces.

Chelsea Curtis (10 kills, 11 digs, one solo block) and Taylor Stratton (eight kills, 10 digs, one solo block and one assisted block) led LHS at the net. Jessica Vande Hoef had a team-high 12 digs and was 9-for-10 serving with three aces, Ellen Dahl was 9-for-9 serving with two aces and Hailey Stulen and Codi Oehlerts each added a solo block.

The Cardinals will be at home against Redwood Valley on Thursday.

Fulda 3, ML/B-O 0

MOUNTAIN LAKE -- Fulda opened strong and didn't look back in a 25-14, 25-22, 25-17 victory against Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin.

Brittney Hermeling had 12 digs and eight kills for the Raiders, Courtney Hulstein had 24 set assists, Amanda Schumacher registered three blocks, Rachel Cheadle (12 for-13 serving with three aces) had a team-high 10 kills, Sylvia Zanini (16-for-18 serving for 13 points, one ace) added seven kills and Dani Hermeling was 11-for-12 serving with one ace.

Laura Romsdahl (nine kills) and Janessa Peters (eight kills) led the Wolverines' attack by each going 16-for-18 in hitting chances. Briana Wolff had a team-high seven digs, Mikayla Falk added six digs and Rachel Dukes was 10-for-12 serving with two aces and also had 17 set assists.

ML/B-O (6-9-1) will host Edgerton on Thursday. Fulda (7-8, 4-3) will play at Murray County Central on Thursday.

Adrian 3, Ellsworth 1

ELLSWORTH -- Adrian dropped Game 1 but rallied for a 20-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-18 victory against Ellsworth.

Courtney Vaske (19-for-21 serving for 17 points, nine kills, 12 digs, four blocks) and Sydne Springman (13 kills, 12 digs, four blocks) each had a strong all-around performance to lead the Dragons. Nichole Loosbrock (20-for-20 serving for 12 points, three aces) had 15 set assists and Rachel Kontz had 17 set assists.

Abby Drenth led the Panthers by going 18-for-19 at the service line with two aces and 13 points while also earning eight kills in 30 attacks. She also had 16 digs and three blocks.

Kadie Werner (13-for-14 serving for nine points, one ace, 17 attacks for three kills), Emily Timmer (11-for-12 serving for five points, one ace), Bridget Kramer (18 set assists) and Alexa Huisman (four blocks) also had strong contributions for Ellsworth.

The Panthers (7-9, 3-4) host Southwest Christian on Thursday and Adrian (6-8, 2-5) will host Hills-Beaver Creek the same night.

SWC 3, W-WG 1

EDGERTON -- The Southwest Christian volleyball team gained ground in the Red Rock Conference standings with a key 23-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-22 victory against Westbrook-walnut Grove on Tuesday.

The Eagles received strong service games from Hannah Van Dyke (16-for-18 serving with two aces, 18 digs) and Deidra Vander Woude (15-for-18 serving with three aces, eight kills). Amber Pater (17 digs) had a team-high 21 kills, Michaela Zeinstra had three blocks and 22 set assists and Emaleigh Vreeman had 19 set assists.

The Chargers had strong all-around performances by Paige Erickson (11-for-11 serving, 11 kills, 16 digs) and Dayna Comnick) 16-for-16 serving, one ace, 16 kills, 23 digs). Anne Woelber was 11-for-11 serving with two aces and 31 set assists, Hailey Osland had three kills, Abby Herding had five set assists and Karley Deprez and Madison Takle each had two ace blocks.

SWC (14-4-1, 6-1) will play at Ellsworth on Thursday and W-WG (11-7, 5-2) will host Southwest Star Concept on Thursday.

Edgerton 3, RL-B 2

EDGERTON -- Led by 11-kill efforts from Kailey Wendland and Sarah Baumgard Round Lake-Brewster fought tough against Edgerton, but the Flying Dutchmen were able to eke out a 16-25, 23-25, 25-8, 25-22, 15-11 victory.

Wendland also had three blocks and Baumgard had 21 digs and was 22-for-23 serving with two aces. The Raiders received 20 digs from Sonja Peters and 24 set assists from Zoe Baerenwald.

Edgerton had a 16-point service game from Jessica Menning (40 set assists) and 12-point service games from Sarah Post and Lindsey Drooger (nine kills). Ciara Everett had team highs with 11 kills and 19 digs.

The Flying Dutchmen (8-11, 2-5) will play at Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin on Thursday and RL-B (2-12, 0-7) will host Red Rock Central Thursday.

MCC 3, H-BC 0

HILLS -- Murray County Central earned a dominant 25-3, 25-6, 25-14 sweep of Hills-beaver Creek.

Makenzie Giese led the Rebels with 21 service points. She also had three service aces and four kills. Taylor Schreier had 12 service points, four aces and six kills.

Brooklyn Schmitz had 20 set assists for MCC, Kristi Bose had eight kills and Ashley Woldt had six kills.

The Rebels (7-4, 5-2) will host Fulda on Thursday.
