PREP VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Murray County Central downs Southwest Star Concept in 5 games
OKABENA -- Kristi Bose and Makenzie Giese combined for 30 kills Tuesday evening, as Murray County Central earned a hard-fought 3-2 Red Rock Conference volleyball victory over Southwest Star Concept.
The Quasars won both the first and third games by four points, but the Rebels (11-7, 7-2) convincingly took Games 2 and 4, setting up a decisive Game 5.
MCC prevailed on game scores of 21-25, 25-11, 21-25, 25-10 and 15-12.
Bose, a sophomore, cracked 17 kills and served for 15 points, including a trio of aces. She also had four blocks and six digs on the defensive side for the Rebels.
Giese, a senior veteran, had 13 kills for MCC, while sophomore setter Paige Thomas had a match-high 34 assists, along with five digs.
Brooklyn Schmitz (four digs, 12 points, one ace) and Taylor Schreier (10 points, three aces) also served served well for the Rebels, while Ashley Clarke came up with a pair of timely blocks.
SSC, which was defeated in conference action for just the second time all season, received a match-high 18 kills from freshman Courtney Place.
Senior Maddie Rasche (match-high 24 digs) led the Quasars (16-9, 7-2) in serving with a 20-of-22 performance, which included a dozen points.
Juniors Mandy Henkels (31 set assists) and Alyssa Hendrickson (match-high six blocks, 10 kills, 13-of-13 serving, seven points) also had fine all-around nights for the Quasars.
SSC travels to play Edgerton Thursday, while MCC hosts Adrian the same evening.
Adrian 3, ML/B-O 1
ADRIAN -- Sydne Springman and Courtney Vaske were strong at the net, helping Adrian post a 3-1 conference win over Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin.
Game scores were 25-17, 25-19, 26-24 and 25-19.
Springman (eight digs) had 15 kills, seven solo blocks and three block assists to lead the Dragons, while Vaske hammered 11 kills and was in on six blocks (four solos, two assists).
Vaske also had a big night at the serving line for Adrian (9-12, 4-5) as she notched 23 points, including a trio of aces, on a 28-of-29 performance.
Rachel Kontz (10 set assists) was a perfect 16-of-16 serving with 10 points.
Nichole Loosbrock (18 set assists) and Nina Weidert (12 digs) led the Dragons in both of those categories.
The Wolverines (9-13-1, 1-9) were led by the serving of Mikayla Falk (17-of-17, one ace) and Rachel Dukes (13-of-13).
Dukes had a match-high 26 set assists, feeding many of those to Janessa Peters, who was 18-of-19 hitting, including 10 kills.
McKenzie Hopwood (one solo block) also had 10 kills for ML/B-O, while Laura Romsdahl contributed eight kills and seven digs.
Briana Wolff came up with six digs for the Wolverines, who host Round Lake-Brewster Thursday.
Adrian travels to Slayton to clash with Murray County Central the same night.
SWC 3, RL-B 0
ROUND LAKE -- Southwest Christian claimed sole possession of first place in the closely-contested Red Rock Conference standings with a sweep of Round Lake-Brewster.
Game scores were 25-10, 25-11 and 25-12.
Hanna Bosma and Amber Pater each smacked 10 kills for the Eagles (15-4-1, 8-1), while Michaela Zeinstra put up a team-high 16 set assists, while also serving 11-of-12 with a pair of aces.
Hannah Van Dyke (team-high 15 digs) was a perfect 13-of-13 serving, while Emaleigh Vreeman (14 set assists) and Morgan Van Hulzen (two ace blocks) were also solid contributors for SWC.
RL-B (4-18, 0-9) was led by freshman Kailey Wendland (six kills, one block, eight digs), Sarah Baumgard (six kills, seven-of-eight serving, two aces), Zoe Baerenwald (12 set assists, six digs, one block, six-of-six serving, one ace) and Jenessa Ling (six digs).
The Raiders travel to Mountain Lake Thursday (to play ML/B-O), while the Eagles host Fulda the same night.
W-WG 3, H-BC 0
WESTBROOK -- It was both Parent's Night and Senior Night at Westbrook-Walnut Grove and the Chargers pleased the home crowd with a 3-0 conference sweep over Hills-Beaver Creek as senior setter Anne Woelber put up her 1,000th career set assist.
Game scores were 25-8, 25-20 and 25-14.
Woelber finished the match with 17 set assists, distributing the ball well for the Chargers, who improve to 16-9 overall and are 7-2 in the conference -- in a four-way tie for second with Southwest Star Concept, Murray County Central and Red Rock Central.
Dayna Comnick (12 kills, 11 digs) and Paige Erickson (nine kills) were both perfect at the serving line for W-WG.
Comnick was 19-of-19 with five aces, while Erickson had three aces on a 17-of-17 performance.
Hailey Osland (six digs, three ace blocks) was also sharp at the serving line for the Chargers (16-9, 7-2), going 16-of-17 with five aces.
Kelsi Wahl (four kills), Abby Herding (seven set assists) and Maddie Frank (one ace block) also contributed at the net for W-WG, which plays at Ellsworth Thursday.
Paige Leuthold was a perfect 11-of-11 serving for H-BC, while Natalie Leuthold was nine-of-10.
Hailey Van Wyhe (three kills, six-of-seven serving) and Hattie Van Wyeh (three kills) led the Patriots at the net.
H-BC hosts RRC Thursday.
JCC 3, Blue Earth Area 0
BLUE EARTH -- Jackson County Central had some struggles implementing a brand-new rotation against Blue Earth Area, but the Huskies rebounded from a Game 1 loss and a 9-2 deficit in Game 4 to earn an eventual 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, 28-26 victory in Tuesday night's volleyball match.
Whitney Burmeister (19 digs, 19 kills, two ace blocks, 17-for-17 serving) and Sydnee Donnelli (16 digs, 17 kills, 20-for-22 serving with four aces) led JCC with strong performances at outside hitter. Kayley Burmeister (13 digs, six kills, two ace blocks, 17-for-17 serving) had a fine match stepping in at middle hitter.
The Huskies also received top contributions from Jasmine Erickson (13 digs, four kills, one ace block, 7-for-8 serving with one ace), Michelle Van Epps (14 digs, five kills, 23 set assists, 13-for-14 serving with one ace), Lydia Brandt (six kills, one ace block) and Lexi Schneekloth (31 set assists, 10-for-11 serving).
JCC (21-3, 3-1) will play at Pipestone Area on Thursday.
RRC 3, Ellsworth 0
JEFFERS -- Brooke Rasmussen's perfect serving performance and strong defense helped lead Red Rock Central to a 25-13, 25-6, 25-17 victory against Ellsworth.
Rasmussen was 18-for-18 serving with three aces and notched a team-high 14 digs. Tegan Derickson (7-for-7 serving, three aces, nine set assists), Mariah Determan (9-for-9 serving, one ace) and Katie Larsen (7-for-7 serving, two aces, seven kills, eight digs) also didn't have a service error on the night for the Falcons.
Klarissa Larsen led RRC with 12 kills, Chloe Arfsten had eight kills and a block, Cassandra Erickson had six digs, Kendra Hagert had seven kills, one solo block and one block assist and Alison Kircher had a team-high 28 set assists and also had one block.
The Panthers were led by Abby Drenth (six kills), Kadie Werner (12-for-12 serving for three aces and seven points), Alexa Huisman (6-for-6 serving for two points), Bridget Kramer (three assists, one block) and Emily Timmer (two blocks, 11 digs).
The Falcons (15-7, 7-2) will play at Hills-Beaver Creek on Thursday and Ellsworth (10-13, 3-6) will host Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Thursday.
Fulda 3, Edgerton 0
FULDA -- Fulda earned a comfortable 25-12, 25-16, 25-15 victory against Edgerton.
Sarah Strenge paced the Raiders at the service line by going 18-for-19 with 15 points and two aces and Courtney Hulstein (15 set assists) also had a fine serving performance by going 12-for-14 with 10 points and two aces.
Brittney Hermeling had 11 kills and 12 digs for Fulda, Rachel Cheadle contributed 10 kills and Dani Hermeling had 12 digs.
The Flying Dutchmen were led by Ciara Everett (five kills, 14 digs), Jessica Menning (five kills, six set assists) and Darian Weatherly (9-for-9 serving for five points).
The Raiders (10-11, 5-4) will play at Southwest Christian on Thursday and Edgerton (9-15, 3-6) will host Southwest Star Concept on Thursday.
