PREP BASEBALL: Windom moves to winner's bracket in 3A

GRANITE FALLS -- Windom picked a good time to play its best baseball of the season, as the Eagles knocked off Canby 5-4 in Section 3A playoff action Wednesday.

Windom (9-13) has knocked off No. 3 seed Wabasso and No. 2 seed ML/B-O in the south and now top-seeded Canby (15-2) in the north, ending the Lancers 15-game winning streak.

Even Windom's coach Brad Schlomann doesn't know how to explain what has happened to his Eagles.

"I don't know," Scholmann said. "We're playing solid baseball.

"Everybody had a hand in this win. We had kids with big at bats in crunch time. It's a good time to be on a roll. It's a good time to be playing good baseball."

Canby took a 2-0 lead into the fifth before Windom busted out four runs. Brandon Thongvivong had an RBI single and Jake Holt blasted a three-run homer to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead.

Canby chipped back in, scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to make it a 4-4 game.

The Eagles took the lead right back, as Drak Borsgard led off the seventh with a double, Danny Kneeland bunted him to third and Thongvivong drove Borsgard in with the winning run on a sacrifice fly.

Thongvivong retired Canby in order in the bottom of the seventh to nail down the win.

Windom will play the winner of today's game between Springfield and Lac qui Parle Valley Saturday at noon in Granite Falls.
