PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Mavericks outlast Huskies with FTs

TRIMONT -- In a game that had 46 fouls and 57 free throws and was described as having a "playoff atmosphere" by Jackson County Central assistant coach Jon Beckman, the Martin County West Mavericks sank four free throws in the final 22 seconds to edge the Huskies, 67-63, in a non-conference girls basketball game Thursday.

The Huskies, who trailed by nine points at halftime, rallied after the intermission with their pressure defense to claim the lead with 11 minutes left. The teams swapped the lead 10 times prior to the Mavericks pulling away at the end.

Taryn Tumbleson, who made the go-ahead charity shots with 22 seconds left, led MCW (17-2) with 14 points. Morgan Williamson added 13 points for the Mavericks, while Kate Thiesse and Libbie Lange each scored 11.

Lydia Brandt (two steals) posted a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead JCC. Rachel Johnson (8-for-11 free throws) tallied 17 points, five steals and three assists, while Kailey Burmeister, who made 7 of 7 free throws in the second half and finished 7-for-8 at the charity stripe, filled the columns with 13 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Marita Rasche also had a nice night for the Huskies with seven points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists.

JCC (8-14 overall) made 16 of 24 second-half free throws and finished 20-for-32 in the game. MCW was 12-for-17 at the stripe in the second half and 18-for-25 in the game.

The Huskies travel to Pipestone Area for a Southwest Conference game Feb. 8.

LUVERNE -- Kaitlin Wohnoutka scored 28 points and McKayla Schilling added a line of eight points, eight rebounds, five steals and three assists as the Luverne Cardinals earned a non-conference win over the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers on Thursday.

The Cardinals, who improved to 11-9 overall, also had Amanda Barnhart score nine points and grab seven rebounds, while Tara Sudenga created four assists. Luverne hosts Southwest Conference-leader Marshall tonight.

Sammie Gervais paced the Panthers with 17 points, while Kasey Hoek and Kelli Soupir each scored eight points.

T-M-B (9-9) hosts Lincoln HI in a Camden Conference contest Tuesday.

OKABENA -- Paige Erickson's 25 points, five steals and five rebounds helped the Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers improve to .500 in the Red Rock Conference with a road win over Southwestern United Thursday.

Kelsi Wahl added 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists for W-WG (8-10, 6-6). Dayna Comnick turned in eight points for the Chargers, while Elizabeth Woelber toted a line of seven points on two 3's, five rebounds and three steals.

Courtney Place (two steals, two blocks) totaled game-highs of 32 points and nine rebounds for the Wildcats. Andrea Hinkeldey followed with nine points, while Autumn Hinkeldey and Kailey Wendland each delivered four assists.

Both teams travel for league contests next. Southwestern United (5-13, 4-7) travels to Adrian tonight, while Westbrook-Walnut Grove is at Murray County Central on Tuesday.
