ST. PAUL -- The day did not go as planned for the Adrian Area Dragons (29-5), who saw their season end Thursday with a pair of Class AA state tournament losses.

New Prague handed Adrian Area a 32-19 quarterfinals setback before Perham eliminated the Dragons 33-25 in the consolation semifinals. It was the only time this season Adrian Area dropped consecutive duals.

"People talk about how young we are, and we wrestled like that (Thursday)," Dragons head coach Gregg Nelson said. "We wrestled like freshmen, making mistakes. We can't get beat when we're leading a bout 4-1 or in overtime."

Adrian Area lost a 10-point (25-15) lead through 10 weight classes while being ousted by Perham.

The Dragons took six of the first 10 bouts by scoring three decisions (Tony Lynn at 132, Logan Rogers at 145, Matthew Slater at 160), a major decision (Jesse Slater at 170) and two pins (Skylar Hieronimus at 106, Jaydan Bullerman at 120).

But Jacob Guehma won a key match against Michael Pruess at 126. Pruess built a 4-1 advantage before Guehma rallied to tie the contest 6-all after 6 minutes. A takedown from Guehma in overtime sealed the decision.

Hieronimus pinned Gage Paurus in 52 seconds to set an Adrian Area record for pins in a season with 28.

But the Yellowjackets took the match by winning the final four bouts. William Parks (182) and Jesse Bucholz (285) each posted pins, while Jesse Klatt (195) and Cody Nylander (220) both earned decisions.

Against New Prague, the lower weights struggled for Adrian Area.

The Trojans led 17-10 after winning seven of the first 10 bouts. Greg Kern (decision at 106), Bullerman (major decision at 120) and Lynn (decision at 126) were the only victors for the Dragons during that span.

Meanwhile, New Prague swept four straight matches from 145 through 170. Morgan Parriott (major decision at 145), Richard Reinartz (decision at 152), Joe Heinz (decision at 160) and Andrew Maruska (decision at 170) all sparked the Trojans' charge.

"We knew that New Prague had some tough kids in the lower weights, so we decided to move some of our kids up in the lineup, kind of rolling the dice," Nelson said. "The problem we had was that it put some of our kids at disadvantages in some weight classes."

Adrian Area rallied for a 19-17 lead behind Jesse Slater, who scored a 2-1 decision over Logan Giles at 182 before Adam Garmes pinned Cody Sirek in 2:54 at 195.

But Nathan Preston (220) and Zach LaFavor sealed New Prague's victory by, respectively, pinning Quinn Cleveland in 35 seconds and preserving a 3-0 decision against Tony Sieve.
