Prep Tennis: Luverne boys' tennis improves to 12-0

LUVERNE -- After defeating the Fairmont Cardinals 6-1 Saturday, the Luverne Cardinals improved to 12-0 on the season.

"The singles players played really steady today," Luverne coach Greg Antoine said. "It was really windy, so everyone had to gauge the win on every time they switched sides and I thought the singles guys did a good job of that."

The Luverne swept Fairmont in the singles matches, with Joey (6-2, 7-5) and Jonny Vajgrt (6-1, 6-0) both taking down their opponents in two sets at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively. Dustin Deutsch won both of his matches 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Andrew Jelken won his matches 6-2 and 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

"We also are really improving on our building up points until you have a shot that you can just put away as a winner," Antoine said.

At No. 1 doubles, Scott Nelson and Blake Zielger lost their first match before rallying in the next two to get the win (2-6, 6-0, 6-3). The only loss the Cardinals suffered on the day came at No. 2 doubles, when Ethan Johnson and Zach Gillette lost in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 3-6).

"Both our No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams lost their first sets," Antoine said. "Scott and Blake were able to come back to get the win, but Ethan and Zach just weren't able to do that."

Hunter Robinson and Erik Wohnoutka took down their opponent in two sets (6-0, 6-1) to get Luverne its sixth point of the day.

Luverne travels to MACCRAY Tuesday.
