Prep Tennis: Cardinals defeat Yellow Medicine East

LUVERNE -- Never dropping more than two games in any set, the Luverne Cardinals boys tennis team solidified its No. 1 ranking in the Section 3A tournament Monday by disposing of Yellow Medicine East, 7-0.

Luverne will play its section semifinal match against Montevideo at noon today in Redwood Falls. In the other semifinal, Worthington and MACCRAY contend at approximately 2 p.m. The championship match will follow the 2 p.m. match.

LHS, now 15-0 on the season, easily defeated Yellow Medicine East. No. 1 singles player Joey Vajgrt beat David Nowacki 6-2, 6-0. No. 2 singles entry Jonny Vajgrt dumped Brandon Repsher 6-0, 6-0. No. 3 singles player Dustin Deutsch topped Grant Elliott 6-2, 6-1. And at No. 4 singles, Andrew Jelken defeated Shane Nokleby 6-0, 6-1.

The Cardinals' Scott Nelson and Blake Ziegler beat Yellow Medicine East's Wastena Gill and Natthew Virnig 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Ethan Johnson and Zach Gillette got the best of James DeJager and Cody Speh 6-1, 6-0. And at No. 3 doubles, Matt Arends and Hunter Robinson defeated Todd Nowacki and Amman Bennett 6-1, 6-1.
