Prep Golf: Marshall sweeps Southwest Conference Golf Tournament

MARSHALL -- The Worthington Trojan boys' golf team finished third, while the girls' took fourth during the Southwest Conference tournament Monday.

"I'm very pleased with how we did today," WHS coach Ron Wood said. "This is the first time we have played 18 holes in one day, so it was a nice way to get our legs in shape for the sub-sections on Wednesday."

On the boy's side, Marshall finished in first place with a 297 team score, followed by Redwood Valley (331), Worthington (336), Windom (343), Luverne (345), Jackson County Central (353) and Pipestone Area (391).

Low medalist on the day was Marshall's Jacob Baker, who shot a 71. Alex Kremer shot an 82 to lead the Trojans with Jacob Weg scoring an 84 to go along with a pair of 85s from Will Mulder and Seth Meier. Jacob Woll (92) and Tyler VanHove (93) rounded out the Worthington golfers.

"The players who stayed out of the tall grass on the sides of the fairway had an easier time today," Wood said.

Low scorer for JCC was Joseph Brinkman who shot an 81, while Luverne's Mark Spreiter and Colton Arends both shot 85s. Windom's Kyle Antes and Tanner Diemer also shot 85s on the day, while Brock Morgan finished with a 90.

In the girls' tournament, Marshall took first once again; scoring a 350 as a team while JCC (372) and Windom (375) rounded out the top three spots. Worthington shot a 383 as a team, followed by Redwood Valley (406), Luverne (410). Pipestone Area's score was incomplete.

"The depth of the ruff was magnified even more so on the lady's side," Wood said. "The girls who hit in there needed a lot of strength to get it back out again."

Windom's Megan Will was the low medalist for the girls, shooting an 80. Kate Lesnar led Worthington with an 84, followed by McKenzie Hurley (95), Morgan Harberts (96), Genna Putnam (108), Tyree Murray (118) and Kia Veen (127).

JCC's Alison Benson shot an 86 on the day, followed by Luverne's Emilee Johnson and Makayla Sterrett who both shot 96s.

All-Conference teams were also announced, with Lesnar being named to the girls' team, while Harberts and Meier were named to the girls' and boys' honorable mentions.

The Trojans head to the sub-section tournament Wednesday where they will face off with Marshall, Luverne and Pipestone Area at the Tyler Country Club with a 9 a.m. start.
