Section 3AA Softball: Trojans clip JCC, 4-2

NEW ULM -- Sarah Ebbers pitched seven strong innings, and Paige Kinley went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to help lead the sixth-seeded Worthington Trojans to a 4-2 victory over the third-seeded Jackson County Central Huskies in the first round of the Section 3AA South high school softball tournament Tuesday afternoon.

Worthington (5-13) advanced to play second-seeded New Ulm and lost 13-0 in five innings. The Trojans now play an elimination game Saturday in Marshall (11 a.m.) against an opponent to be determined.

Ebbers struck out two batters and allowed two earned runs on seven hits and two walks to help Worthington capture the win over JCC.

"Sarah pitched very well," WHS head coach Josh Wasmund said. "She scattered seven hits and was able to pitch out of a few tough spots. Our defense was also solid behind her, making lots of good plays."

Worthington scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. Aleanna Heig was 3-for-4 with two doubles to spark the Trojans.

"We came up with some key hits with runners in scoring position," Wasmund said. "We knew that we could match up with JCC as far as hitting went. It was going to come down to pitching and defense, and we got the job done in those two areas."

JCC's Brooke Klontz fanned nine batters and allowed four runs on six hits and two walks. Both Klontz and Brittany Woodke went 2-for-4 to lead the Huskies at the plate.

Worthington had just one hit in the game against New Ulm, as Betsy Thompson was 1-for-2.

Ebbers pitched all five innings in the shortened game (10-run rule). She had one strikeout and allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits and four walks.

"We were a little tired and flat in the New Ulm game, coming off an emotional win over JCC," Wasmund said. "New Ulm did a nice job of putting some pressure on us with some bunt hits and a couple of home runs. They are a very good team."

PIPESTONE -- Tasia Woelber twirled a complete-game gem Tuesday afternoon, leading the top-seeded Pipestone Area Arrows to a 5-1 victory over the fifth-seeded Fairmont Cardinals in the second round of the Section 3AA South high school softball tournament.

Woelber (four strikeouts, one walk) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Fairmont's Courtney Whitmore clubbed a solo home run to account for the Cardinals' only offensive production.

PA's Amanda Haupert also slammed a solo home run, while Cassie Evans (three runs, double), Tiffany Woelber (two RBIs), Paige Petersen (RBI) and Brittany Evans each had two hits to spark the Arrows.

Fairmont had advanced to play PA after claiming a 7-2 victory over fourth-seeded Luverne in an opening-round game earlier Tuesday.

PA (17-1) moves on to play an opponent to be determined Saturday in Marshall. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
