Section 2AA Track: Trojans' Abella takes third in girls shot put

ST. PETER -- The Worthington Trojans finished off the final day of the Section 2AA Track and Field events at Gustavus Adolphus with two athletes just missing a trip to the state meet Friday.

"We have a really tough section, so it is not an easy thing to make it to state," WHS coach Ken Henkels said. "We had a lot of kids do a good job today."

Maer Abella came in third in the girls shot put, just three feet behind the second place finisher. In the boys long jump, Jessie Guerra finished fifth by a little under an inch.

"Maer and Jessie both did really well," Henkels said. "Jessie jumped a pretty good distance and Maer was just one place out of making it to state in the shot put."

After advancing to the finals in the 400 meter dash on Wednesday, Ethan Spittle finished eighth Friday, less than one second behind the seventh place finisher. In the girls 300 meter hurdles, Whitney Coriolan took seventh, less than one second out of fourth place.

"Whitney ran pretty well today," Henkels said. "But her time just didn't come in under the time she needed to have to advance to state."

The Worthington boys 4 x 200 meter relay team (including Guerra, Troy Ektnitphong, Will Dudley and Ethan Spittle) finished sixth out of 14 teams, while the boys 4 x 400 team (Peter Scholtes, Nathan Landwehr, Oliver Wolyniec and Spittle) took twelfth. The Trojan boys' 4 x 800 team (Ian Stewart, Gordy Moore, Landwehr and Wolyniec) took eleventh with the girls 4 x 200 team (Allison Kremer, Mary Chan, Emma Thuringer and Meydee Okello) also finished eleventh.

"We face some really big schools in sections and that makes it tough," Henkels said. "But overall, we did pretty well the Section meet as a whole."

Will Dudley will represent the Trojans at state next Friday when he competes in the boys pole vault at 9 a.m. Friday at Hamline University in St. Paul.
