VFW Baseball: Worthington VFW splits with Sioux Falls Central
SIOUX FALLS -- The Worthington VFW baseball team committed nine errors and gave up 27 walks in a doubleheader against Sioux Falls Central, but was able to split the two games, winning 12-11 in Game 1 and losing 14-4 in Game 2.
"Our pitchers were not throwing strikes, which caused our fielders to fall asleep," VFW coach T. D. Hostikka said. "We were lucky to come away with a split today."
Nate Russell picked up the win on the mound in Game 1 for Worthington, while Logan Thuringer and Oliver Wolyniec led the offense with two hits apiece. Thuringer had two RBIs to go along with a three-RBI double by Wolyniec. Thuringer also had four stolen bases in Game 1.
In Game 2, Carson Hagen took the loss for Worthington on the mound, while Wolyniec went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored. Nate Braaksma knocked in three RBIs on two hits.
Worthington (12-5, 4-1) takes on Marshall Blue in a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. today in Wilmont.
