LHS tennis team wins, 5-4

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. —On a hot Tuesday, Luverne defeated Sioux Falls Lincoln JV 5-4 in a girls tennis meet. The singles matches were started at 1-1 and the doubles matches were started 2-2 in each set.

Luverne split the singles matches 3-3 with its hosts but won two of three doubles matches.

First and second singles went Luverne’s way, with Paige Adams beating Sarah Ponwith 6-3, 7-6 (7-4 tiebreaker) and Kynzie Smedsrud beating Kaitlin Olson 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). The Cardinals’ McKenzi Wenninger, Monaya Hustoft and Tatiana Gust lost at third, fourth and fifth singles, with Wenninger falling 6-3, 6-4 to Eli Crain, Hustoft falling 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 10-6 (supertiebreaker) to Brooke Lovrien and Gust losing 6-4, 6-1 to Sydney Dixon.

But at sixth singles, Luverne’s Sam Pierce beat Alli Berry 3-6, 7-5, 10-4 (supertiebreaker).

In first doubles, Luverne’s Paige Adams and Kynzie Smedsrud defeated Sarah Ponwith and Kaitlin Olson 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 supertiebreaker. At second doubles, the Cardinals’ Lexie Severtson and Brianna Erickson topped Eli Crain and Brooke Lovrien 7-5, 5-7, 10-8 supertiebreaker. At third doubles, Sioux Falls’ Dydey Dixon and Alli Berry prevailed over McKenzi Wenninger and Danielle Kneip 6-4, 6-4.
