Prep volleyball: Sweeps abound in first round of tourney

EDGERTON — The Red Rock Central girls volleyball team advanced Monday night to the second round of South Section 3A action with a sweep over Edgerton on the road. 

The Falcons won in straight sets, 28-26, 25-12, 25-14. They advance to 15-10 on the year and will face Murray County Central, the tournament’s third seed, Friday night at Windom Area.

RRC senior Brooke Rasmussen hit four aces, Rachel Kedl had two, and Melanie Kedl had two to lead the Cardinals Monday. Senior Cassandra Erickson had 13 kills and sophomore Olivia Bittner added 10. Mikaela Smith had 29 assists. Erickson had nine digs, and Smith chipped in eight. Melanie Kedl had a hand in five blocks and Smith had two.

Edgerton sophomore Mandie Petersen and junior Megan Petersen each had one ace. Sophomore Mia Wassink had seven kills. Edgerton juniors Tanner Gunnink and Jessica Jasper had five kills apiece. Jordyn Smit had 17 set assists and 10 digs for the Flying Dutchmen.

Adrian 3, Ellsworth 0

ELLSWORTH — In Ellsworth, the Adrian Dragons swept the Panthers.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-22 and 25-21.

As Adrian head volleyball coach Brianne Einck said, her girls came out ready for the win.

“The girls went into the game with the goal to sweep, and we ended up doing that,” Einck said after the match.

Sydnie Weiss led the Dragons with 17 set assists and 33 digs. Shelly Loosbrock 18 digs and Amy Bents had two kills. Corie Reckamp had five kills and 32 digs, and Christina Loonan had 24 digs.

Adrian heads to Luverne Friday to take on offensively strong T-M-B for their next playoff match.

“We know T-M-B is strong hitting, and we’ll play to our defensive strength,” Einck said.

SWC 3, Fulda 0

EDGERTON — Southwest Christian easily swept Fulda in its first round playoff match, with set scores going 25-9, 25-6 and 25-15.

Serving well for SWC were Kassydi Vreeman, Ann Pater Tianna Top. Vreeman finished the match 16-of-18 with five aces, Pater was 14-for-15 with two aces, and Top was 11-for-11 with two aces. Pater, Vreeman and Top each had 10 kills apiece.

Hope Veldkamp and Vreeman had 12 and 11 digs respectively for Southwest. Setter Sydney Esselink had 31 set assists.

For Fulda, Randi Tiesler was 7-for-7 serving. Myah Holinka led with eight kills, a block and 12 digs. Tiesler and Millie Piper had four digs apiece.

Interim SWC head volleyball coach Deana Top had good things to say about her team’s performance on Monday.

“The girls came out strong; we had a really good team effort,” Top commented. “We had a really good passing game tonight, and we were able to win with some quick sets.”

Southwest Christian will take on Wabasso Friday at Luverne.

W-WG 3, H-BC 0

WESTBROOK— Westbrook-Walnut Grove easily handled visiting Hills-Beaver Creek, in a sweep.

Set scores were 25-11, 25-11 and 25-14 in the Chargers’ favor.

Maddison Thicke led W-WG serving, going a perfect 20-20 with seven aces. Dayna Comnick was 12-for-12 with two aces and Mariah Olson was 7-for-7 from behind the line.

“The girls passed well, and we had really good serving,” W-WG head coach Cathy Bauman said. “We mixed it up well and put some balls down.”

Comnick had 16 kills, and Cassidy Mischke had nine. Elizabeth Woelber led the Chargers with 12 digs, and Comnick had nine.

W-WG heads to Luverne to take on Southwest United on Friday for the second round of sub-sections.
