Boys basketball: MLA dispatches Ellsworth, JCC falls to BEA

MOUNTAIN LAKE — Mountain Lake Area outlasted Ellsworth in the championship game of its boys basketball tournament Friday night.

After routing Truman-Martin Luther in the semifinals Thursday, the Wolverines defeated Ellsworth 60-54 to win their own tournament.

Andrew Hempeck led MLA with 19 points and Carter Kirk chipped in 18. Ellsworth had Jon Kramer (14), Justin Kruse (14), Drew Cheskie (12) and Mitch Leuthold (11) all contributed double figures.

Ellsworth falls to 9-3 on the season and MLA improved to 9-0. In the third place game of the tournament, Legacy Christian beat ML/Truman 63-54.

JCC at Blue Earth Area Tournament BLUE EARTH — Jackson County Central gave up a 10-point lead in the first half and fell 70-62 to United South Central in an opening round game at a tournament at Blue Earth Area.

Jon Harmening, a senior for the Huskies, led his team with 21 points and 22 rebounds. Darnell Taylor-Breck scored 19 points and Zach Schwarting added 10. Walker Linde led USC with 14 points and Steve Voigt added a dozen.

Jackson County Central dropped to 4-5 with the loss.

Windom Classic WINDOM — Windom Area tripped New Ulm 69-58 and Mounds View defeated Albert Lea 70-50 in the first round of the Windom Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament.

Kyle Antes and Bryce Bever each scored 15 points to lead the Eagles. Sam Huska had 14 points and Jeff Pfeffer 10. Grant Kannengiesser scored 17 points to pace New Ulm.

Strong second half defense allowed the Eagles (3-6) to maintain their advantage after leading 29-26 at intermission. In the third place game today, New Ulm and Albert Lea play at 6 p.m. The championship game between Windom Area and Mounds View is to follow.

Mankato East 57, T-M-B 50 TRACY — Gorg Alhag scored 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds as Mankato East tripped Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 57-50. Matt Bornholdt scored nine points to help the Cougars’ cause. Josh Kirk hit for 17 points and Spencer Smith 15 for T-M-B.
