Boys hockey: Luverne blanks Marshall 3-0
LUVERNE — It wasn’t their best performance, said head coach Derrick Brown. But it was good enough for the Luverne Cardinals boys hockey team to stay unbeaten on the 2013-14 winter season.
Luverne (13-0-1) shut out Southwest Conference rival Marshall 3-0 Thursday, overcoming an inspired defensive performance from the Tigers.
“We kind of battled ourselves all night. But we were able to score some opportunistic goals,” Brown said.
It wasn’t until inside the final minute of the first period that the Cardinals were able to break the ice, as Jaxon Nelson scored on an assist from Chaz Smedsrud. Connor Hoffman, with an assist from Logan Norman, scored a shorthanded goal in the second period. And still in the second period, Norman scored as Hoffman and Gunnar Olson were credited with assists.
Kendall Meyer stopped 21 shots in goal for LHS. For the game, the Cards outshot Marshall 26-21.
