Prep girls basketball: MCC, Fulda win handily

SLAYTON — Defense was key for Murray County Central as it forced 24 turnovers to defeat Westbrook-Walnut Grove 71-56 in a girls basketball game Tuesday night in Slayton.

Elizabeth Woelber was the highest scorer for the Chargers with 33 points and Dayna Comnick assisted with seven points.

The victorious Rebels were led by senior Rebekah Nysetvold who scored 20. Morgan Behrends added 17 and Sierra Van Iperen piled on 13.

MCC improves to 4-3 overall and 4-1 in the Red Rock Conference.

Fulda 73, RRC 51

LAMBERTON — Fulda remained undefeated in Red Rock Conference play by pulling away from Red Rock Central for a 73-51 win.

The Raiders received a double double from senior Melissa Gehl who had 26 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Sariah Cheadle contributed a great all around game stuffing the stat line with 22 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Courtney Tiesler also added 14 points and six rebounds.

Brooke Rasmussen led the Falcons with 18 points. Also adding to the effort were Melanie Kedl with 10 points and Ramsey Piotter with eight.

Fulda improves to 7-2 overall and 5-0 in the Red Rock Conference, while RRC falls to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

SW United 57, Edgerton 36

EDGERTON — Southwestern United rode a strong first half to a comfortable 57-36 rout over Edgerton and, with it, improved to 5-4.

SW United was led by junior Courtney Place’s seven rebounds that went with 15 points. Kailey Wendland added 12 points and seven rebounds. Also contributing for the Wildcats was Autumn Hinkeldey’s nine points and five assists.

Edgerton revieved a strong effort from Tanner Gunnick with 12 points as well as Mia Wassink with 10 and Jenny Nelson with 10.

Windom Area 62, St. James 50

ST. JAMES — The Windom Area Eagles overcame a 15-point defecit to earn a hard fought comeback win over St. James 62-50.

The Eagles, trailing 31-16 at halftime, outscored St. James 46-19 in the second half to improve to 6-3.

Windom Area was led by Kelsey Hanefeld’s 19 points. Katie Kelly added 12 and Jasmine Carlson tacked on 17.

Allison Brandts led the way for St. James with 19.

Ellsworth 52, H-BC 34

HILLS — Alexa Huisman scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Ellsworth past Hills-Beaver Creek 52-34.

Alissa Walters scored 13 points while Heidi Nolte contributed 11 points and seven rebounds for the Panthers.

Avery Van Roekel scored nine points for Hills-Beaver Creek, also collecting six rebounds. Teammate Kelly Esselink had eight rebounds.

Ellsworth is 4-5 on the season and H-BC fell to 1-5.

LAKE PARK, Iowa — Outscored 9-6 in the first quarter, Harris-Lake Park came back to outscore Graettinger-Terril-Ruthven-Ayrshire 19-7 in the second and rolled to a nine-point victory.

A more aggressive defensive effort paved the second quarter turnaround for the Wolves.

Miranda Brueggeman led the way with 19 points. Noreen Morrow added 13 as H-LP improved to 9-4 on the season on their own hardwood.

Lauren Flaherty scored 12 points for G-T/R-A.

Sheldon 59, Central Lyon 46

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa — Everything seemed to be going Central Lyon’s way in the first half, but then came the second.

Trailing 32-22 at halftime, Sheldon outscored their hosts 24-3 in the third quarter after making a quick 7-0 run to start the frame. With a flurry of three-pointers to end the quarter, the Orabs held a 46-35 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Krista Bousema had 25 points and Sami Kleinwolterink 10 to pace Sheldon. Angel Rasmussen had 13 and Shaylee Struckman 10.
