Weekend prep roundup: JCC boys stun No. 2 rated Fairmont, Fulda loses at home

JACKSON — The Jackson County Central Huskies took on the Fairmont Cardinals Saturday night in boys basketball action. 

The Huskies beat Class AA’s No. 2-ranked Fairmont 73-68.

Jon Harmening and Zach Schwarting led JCC with 23 points apiece and Harmening picked out six rebounds. Brady Place added 11 points and six rebounds. One of only four Cards to score in the game, Mitch Pfingsten scored 38.

“The guys played with a lot of energy and passion, and we really executed defensively,” JCC head coach Trent Sukalski said. “We really made them work for everything; it was a big win, a big win.”

Madelia 73, Fulda 55

FULDA — Bennett Appel’s 15 points and eight rebounds couldn’t hold Madelia’s superior offense as Fulda lost 73-55.

Josh Ramerth (15 points), Justin Dierks (13) and Cole Dierks (11) also scored in double-digits for Fulda.

EDGERTON — Southwest Christian used a late first-half run to pull away from Pipestone Area.

Leighton Sampson scored 29 points, blocked five shots and collected 10 rebounds in the win. Nate Pfeifle added 11. Silas Top hit three 3-pointers for nine.

Justin Rops led the Arrows with 13.

Central Lyon 63, Luverne 42

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa — Nic Lutmer and Kalen Eckenrod each had 15 points as they led Central Lyon past Luverne by a score of 63-42.

Josh Slieter and Nick Overgaard led the Cardinals in scoring with eight points apiece.

Wabasso 60, RRC 26

LAMBERTON — Shooting only 20 percent from the floor, the Red Rock Central Falcons lost to Wabasso 60-26.

Leading RRC was Thomas Blomgren, who tallied 12 points and five rebounds. Cole Pankonin also added five more rebounds.

Central Lyon 65, Luverne 51

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa — Angel Rasmussen tallied 17 points with four assists as she led Central Lyon past Luverne 65-51.

Ivy Sieperda added 15 points and four steals, while Sarah Halse added 10 points on rebounds.

LCWM 41, W/ML 24

WINDOM — Windom/Mountain Lake fell to Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial in a wrestling dual in Windom.

The Cobras tied the meet at 6-6 on a fall earned by 113-pounder Wyatt Stevens and then trailed 10-9 after a 3-2 decision won by Joe Fischenich at 126. LCWM built its biggest lead of the night at 23-12 following the 152-pound bout. In the balance of the meet, the Cobras had wins coming from Andrew Larson (170), Vince Johnson (195) and Ricardo Garcia (285).

Sioux City East Duals Tourney

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Jackson County Central ventured into Iowa and picked up five team wins toward a championship at the Sioux City East Duals Tournament.

The Huskies earned wins over Bishop Heelan Catholic (68-6), Norfolk, Neb. (68-9), East (52-24) and two wins over Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (60-12 and 54-18).

Wabasso/RRC Tournament

WABASSO — Adrian finished with two wins and a loss at a dual tournament in Wabasso.

The Dragons beat Zumbroto-Mazeppa 33-25 and Chaska 56-19 but fell 43-17 to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City. The result pushes Adrian’s record to 13-5.

Adrian opened its dual against Z-M with two straight pins and had two more in the closing stretches to secure the victory. Adrian gave up one pin, a forfeit and a decision in its dual against Chaska for the blowout win.

The ACGC Falcons won the final four matches to claim that dual.

Girls hockey

WA 4, Morris/Benson 2

WINDOM — Windom Area earned its second win of the season, this time over Morris/Benson.

Addison Beaty, Alexis Jellemaa-Baerg, Molly Boyum and Kaylee Janssen each had goals for WA.

Windom Area’s starting goalie, Emily Steen, saved 40 of 42 shots.

Luverne 4, Willmar 0

LUVERNE — In a key contest between sectional combatants, Luverne shut out Willmar 4-0 to improve to 16-0-1 on the season. The Cardinals won despite being outshot 31-26.

“This is a big win for us,” said LHS head coach Derrick Brown. “They’re a tough opponent. I would consider them one of the best teams in the section.”

Luverne goalie Kendall Meyer earned the shutout while Logan Norman scored two goals. Jaxon Nelson and Gunnar Olson added a goal apiece.
