Prep wrestling: Pipestone Area edges WHS, 29-26

PIPESTONE —Pipestone Area achieved a narrow wrestling victory over visiting Worthington Tuesday, as the Arrows eeked out a 29-26 victory on their home mat.

Worthington sophomore Hser Eh Pwae won by 19-6 major decision to begin the dual for his team, but Pipestone Area bounced back and won the next two bouts. Arrows eighth-grader Michael Suda beat Worthington’s Ethan Pavelko on a second-period pin before Garret Ploeger pulled off a 19-9 major decision at 120 pounds. State champion Anthony Luft picked the Trojans back up, pinning his opponent in the third period at 126.

Pipestone Area built a 26-10 lead through the 160-pound match, a 15-4 major decision won by Brady Bos. Worthington won the next four matches, on the effort of Zach Kempema (170), Blake Schroeder (182), Peter Abraham (195) and a forfeit received by Carson Hagen (220). Pipestone’s Blake Wolters defeated Trevor Wietzema by 6-1 decision at 285 to decide the dual.

“It was a hard loss. It was a dual we wanted. We had some kids who stepped up and some who worked hard but came up short. There’s not a whole lot to say but, during the course of the season, this is part of the roller coaster ride,” Worthington coach Mark Prunty said. “There are always bright spots you can take away and we’ll also look at the areas where we can improve, so it helps us win close matches in the future.”
