Prep weekend roundup: Pipestone Area boys victorious at home, WA girls hockey shutout in St. Peter

PIPESTONE — Pipestone Area edged St. James Area, 73-70, in a close high school boys basketball game played Saturday afternoon. 

The Arrows trailed 36-30 at halftime and the Saints, riding the waves of senior Zach Brandts’ 32 points, came up a little bit short. They were outscored by Pipestone Area 43-34 in the closing 18 minutes.

Justin Rops paced the Arrows with 18 points on the day. Junior center Collin Moeller and junior guards Boyer Bouman and Dominic Freese all scored 12.

MLA 72, Madelia 32

MOUNTAIN LAKE — Mountain Lake Area pushed its record to 14-1 overall with a convincing 72-32 drubbing of Madelia.

Cody Klassen paced the Wolverines with 23 points and Carter Kirk scored 14 with a team-best six rebounds. Twelve different players scored in the win for MLA.

The Wolverines began the game on a 30-3 sprawl and didn’t look back.

ST. PETER — St. Peter/LeSueur-Henderson had three unassisted goals in their 5-0 win over Windom Area.

The Bulldogs held a 2-0 advantage after the first frame, getting goals from Anna Amos and Maddie Kleschult. Chloe Bachman and Kleschult combined for the final three goals.

Windom Area’s Emily Steen stopped 28 of 32 shots faced through two periods of play. In relief, Madison Willard stopped 13 of her 14 shots faced.

Nighthawk Invite

ROCK VALLEY, Iowa — The Worthington Trojans were separated from first place by just nine points at Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley’s Nighthawk Invitational. MOC-Floyd Valley won the team race with 178 points to the Trojans’ 169. B-H/RV finished third, with 158.5 and Central Lyon/G-LR (141) was fourth.

Placewinners for the Trojans included champions Hser Eh Pwae (106, 17-5 on the season), Anthony Luft (126, 19-2) and Carson Hagen (195, 16-3), runner-up Blake Schroeder (170, 17-9), third-places Hser Moo Pwae (113, 10-11), Vince Riley (152, 3-7), Zach Kempema (160, 18-6), Peter Abraham (220, 8-9) and Trevor Wietzema (285, 8-8), fifth-place Cody Michelson (145, 9-10) and sixth-place King Blanchette (138, 7-15).


JCC Sweetheart Invitational

JACKSON — Jackson County Central’s score of 131.775 was good enough for third at its own Sweetheart Invite.

Worthington took fifth (130.575) and Windom Area/Mountain Lake (127.075) sixth.

Worthington senior Paige Kinley (34.3) placed sixth in the all-around.

Maria Contreras, an eighth grader for the Trojans, placed sixth on floor exercise with an 8.85.
